Can you tell if your site was penalized by Google

Don't get me wrong, I'm not doing anything that can cause this issue but lately I noticed small decrease in my (organic) traffic and inbound links and few other factors . I read somewhere that Google can penalize you even for using a one particular script.

I'm new to this SEO thingy so be gentle. I know my question is maybe too general but I'm looking also for general tips that I'm not aware of.

    Thanks

You can check your keywords positions and verify you did not lose too much in that and also that your page rank is always there. But I have lost also a lot of traffic recently although I have gain page rank and not have really worse positions so I do not think it is a penalty?

Sometimes they will email you... Most of the time, however, they will not email you.

A small decrease in organic traffic doesn't sound like a typical penalty. Hopefully you're tracking your rankings for your major keyword phrases and running some type of analytics package.

If you're really concerned then try to determine using analytics or server logs if some particular keyword and/or page on your site that was previously bringing you a lot of organic traffic but is no longer driving as much traffic. It may simply be that one of your URLs is no longer ranking that well for a keyword phrase that used to drive traffic.

Usually if you are being penalized, you'll notice a significant drop in traffic.

It just happens sometimes. It's summer and traffic always seems to lower a bit for me in the summer. People are going outside and doing things. Look at how you rank in the search engine. Find other keywords to rank for, etc.

If you're still getting traffic, you're probably not being penalized. I wouldn't worry until it's a significant change. What is the % change?

    thanks for all reply
    checking my numbers >>
from begining of march till begining of may daily average organic traffic : around 60
from 05 may till june 29 d. average organic traffic : 102 hits
then huge jump till july 05 d. average organic traffic : 202 ( one day even 409 )
and from that day till today drop to d. average organic traffic : 56-60

I also checked my other site ( different ip but the same server ) which is younger but there is a slowly but very long increase of organic traffic and actually this site is doing better now than the first one.

Well, few more days shows the tendency and meanwhile I'll try to dig up some more about targeted keywords and will update this thread when find something.

    again thanks all

There are the many reasons that google penalize your site if you are doing any black hat techniques and use the duplicate content as well.then google treat a spam..

You shouldn't be worry of small decrease. Only large decrease in visitors can linked to penalty questions. In your case, I think you will get back your normal or even exceed it within few days time.
