Now google has free OS with free word/excel/powerpoint/browser .. and that too fast.. faster.. what would a person need more. free free free.
Certainly will be a worry for Microsoft, their total domination of the OS market looks like it might finally be about to be broken, and who better to do it than Google
The mainstream media as well as Techcrunch seem to think this signals the dawn of an epic battle between Google vs Microsoft. But if you read the original Google announcement, it sounds more as if Google is going head to head with Ubuntu and other open source projects. It doesn't make a lot of sense, and I will confidently predict that Google are biting off more than they can chew. An operating system is a hellishly complicated creature. Google Chrome O/S will likely work smoothly only for a limited number of platforms and devices. And for an O/S, that's simply not good enough. That's probably why they decided to open-source it, they're hoping that when things get hairy - "my bluetooth webcam won't work with Chrome O/S if the USB is plugged in on Wi-fi mode" type of problem - then the open source community will come to the rescue. I really don't think it will - they open source community is already heavily invested in Linux, FreeBSD, etc. and will resent Google coming in and trying to sweep all that away.
Google Chrome OS IS Linux, though, and depending on what it's based, if it is, like something like Debian, heck most of the things out there for Debian work across the board on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, things like that, so if they have it based on Debian, they could be one step ahead of the game.
Dunno about the Google Chrome OS, but it sure will be fun to rumor and talk about. I have 2 netbooks, one with XP and another I'm using right now with Vista. Does everything I need tho' I'm sure I'll download & install Chrome OS once it's available.
I had no choice but to take the Vista "upgrade" last year. Boy was I sorry. I would estimate it has wasted 200 hours of my life since - including 1 x 8 hour session on the phone with Microsoft - which made the problem worse....
I don't think they'll make massive inroads into the OS market unless 1. They can make their OS compatible with Windows Software. 2. Its significantly better and easier to maintain the windows. 3. They keep adverts off their OS. Their browser hasn't made massive inroads either - its roughly about 2% market share at the moment. I shudder to think of turning on my computer and having adsense floating around my desktop as the price for having a 'free' OS. Long Live Linux
I don't think Google is going to do that, personally i think they just want to destroy Microsoft and make Bill Gates want to kill himself But then again it's just wishful thinking, no i think Google is heading down the lines of Ubuntu and that my friend is going to be something that's going to wreck microsoft's market rep
Google is seriously heading towards putting their legs everywhere MS is. Tough competition. Same like what MS is doing by bringing bing
Like i said sorta reminds me of the story of David Vs Goliath though the thing is i think in this case it's goona be Goliath vs Goliath a war of the champions if you will
