    Hi guys,
I tried to reg a gmail account, in the final step, I got this message:
    "Verify your account.
You're almost done. We will send an activation code via SMS to your mobile phone.
Please complete the form below. "

    Did anyone experienced this issue?
    Regards.

Its googles attempt to prevent spammers from using gmail accounts. Whats going on, the gmail captcha pharse is supposed to have been broken by spam bots. The bots create a gmail account, sign up on forums, use gmail to verify the forum account, and then start posting spam in the forum.

By forcing people to receive a text message on their phone, google has some kind of contact information on the person. This should make it impossible - or at least very difficult - for spam bots to create gmail accounts.

When gmail was in beta testing, that was how you had to sign up for it. Once the beta testing was over, google stopped using phone verification. But now it looks like they have turned that option back on. When I signed up for my gmail account years ago, I had to go through the same thing, but that was during the gmail beta testing phase.

Google has been suffering with their service being hit by, among other things, automated signup bots for spam purposes, check out the link below for a little more info on Googles take on it...

"One of the reasons we're offering this new way to sign up for Gmail is to help protect our users and combat abuse. Spam and abuse protection are two things we take very seriously, and our users have been very happy with the small amount of spam they've received in Gmail. We take many measures to ensure that spammers have a difficult time sending their spam messages, getting these messages delivered, or even obtaining a Gmail address (spammers will often use many different addresses to send spam). Sending invitation codes to mobile phones is one way to address this, as the number of addresses created per phone number can be limited."

I just signed up for a Gmail account a few days ago and I did not need to verify thru SMS. Maybe they are just testing something (a new feature) that is why they turned it on again.

    Out of BETA finally.

As for signing up, I just singed up againa nd it didn't ask me to verify via SMS. If you know how to change your IP it may be worth doing so as if you sign up with a lot of gmail accounts Google will make you verify more info to make sure you're not a bot

Gmail is still free. It varies whether you will asked to verify via SMS. I've found that if I create more than one account in a day on the same IP address I am asked to verify my account.

    What's the big deal?

Just confirm the account. I'm sure an SMS can't be that expensive... Or go with yahoo or another free email provider.

I have 1 gmail account, whay would you need more than one gmail account. I thought that there was something in their TOS about only maintaining one account and it wasn't even possibly to signup with more than one account.

Gmail is still free, but I guess the changes made to their account creation process is all because of automatic mail creators. Gmail had and will take different kinds of steps to ensure that no one can spam their service.
