Today I decide to get a new server and company offering option to choose between 32bit or 64 ? I want Centos OS , but not sure which one is better 32 or 64 ? like speed and software compatibility ?
I am not sure about other difference but in 32-bit OS you can use upto 4 GB RAM and on 64-bit OS you can use more RAM (not sure about exact figure but I think it is more than 128 GB).
64bit can handle more calculations because of which it can handle more stuff than a 32bit but using 64bit with less ram is not a good idea so if u have good ram then only use a 64 bit
CentOS is a linux based Operating System. I believe that 64 server would do you more justice if you have enough RAM for it. A 32 bit server can have roughly 8GB Max Ram and a 64 bit can have up to 16GB i believe. So, take a look at the above and choose ~ Mike
You may be partly right there my friend. I know that a 32 bit Computer can have up to 8GB providing that its motherboard and OS support it. I do believe that 16GB is the 64 Bit Max. ~ Mike
I never pay attention to that stuff, does anybody know how to check current OS from cpanel , is that 32 or 64 ? now I am interesting what is my current OS is
create a php file <? phpinfo(); ?> put that code in it and go to the browser to that file all details are there
If you have shell access, you can also type the following: uname -a If you see something like x86_64, it is 64 bit OS.
That is the output : Linux server 2.6.18-92.1.6.el5PAE #1 SMP Wed Jun 25 14:21:46 EDT 2008 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux where u can see is that 32 or 64 ?
so the only difference between 32 and 64 is the memory limit on 32 ? is there any other reasons to use 64 ? like application performance ? how is the appl. working under 64 ?
Read this http://www.pcworld.com/article/111508/are_you_ready_for_a_64bit_pc.html it will give you some benefits of 64 bit pc
After doing some research it would seem that a 64 bit server is much better than a 32 bit one. Here is something to back that point up: http://searchsqlserver.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid87_gci1233009,00.html ~ mike
32bit can handle upto 3.5GB normally and with PAE higher than that; 64bit can handle oodles of RAM. If your CPU is current generation and you have much RAM 4GB+ go for 64bit OS.
