I have noticed that alot of directories do not allow deep linking on their directory but ask that you only submit your home page. Why is that? What difference does it make which page you want your link to go to? Is there a list of directories that allow deep linking?
Most paid directories (what I mostly deal with) will allow a deep link. Almost all free directories will not allow deep links because of the ENORMOUS amounts of spam the directory will get. Let's say, I have a penis pill site that has 200 internal pages. I am going to submit every page of this site to you. Oh and I have a few hundred friends that have made-for-adsense sites that would love to submit every page of their sites to you as well. OK. See the problem? Ultimately (with a very few exceptions), if you need a deep link, you will have to pay for them. I know it sucks but blame the spammers.
At my directory I allow deeplinks only as paid submissions, I even created a special plan for them. Of course many people submit deeplinks without paying but these submissions get deleted. Allowing deep links for a small price imho is one of the best ways of monetizing a free directory. Here is a list of directories allowing deep links
Spam is one reason, and by far the most significant one. But there's also the issue of fairness: look at the amount of flak Dmoz gets for allowing some sites to have hundreds and even thousands of deeplinks to certain sites, whilst the majority of sites that get listed only get one link. There's also the issue of maintaining a directory. People move around internal links far more often than they change domains (which is often enough), so deeplinks are more of a PITA to sort out.
Sure, we list deeplinks. But they're subject to editorial discretion. Many sites offer some very comprehensive content and we choose to list content that makes the directory more useful. Blogs, directories, and reference resources are commonly found on a sub-page. I have no problems with listing quality deeplinks. Spam? I'd imagine you'd receive a bit by accepting deeplink submissions, but it's easy enough to delete.
I don't mind adding deeplinks at my directory, but I have a 1 link per domain rule. Blogs are exceptional also.
Not allowing deeplinks because of spammers is a weak excuse. I actually encourage every site submission to deeplink in their descriptions but few do, because it takes time to add the necessary HTML code. I feel the spammy sites would love to take advantage of it, but it wastes a lot of their time only to be deleted upon review. Deeplinking is very worthwhile for a high quality sites that do not fear being rejected by a directory.
Thanks for the list. I actually got one of them to give me a deep link. Most are paid/reciprocal though. Im glad I got one though for sure!
Actually, it saves a ton of time if you are getting ALOT of free submissions. By not allowing deep links in free submissions, you see them...then you just delete without having to review them. If you are dealing with hundreds of submissions to review, that's a HUGE timesaver. And trust me on this one, the majority of spam submissions are deep links. EDIT: The above statements were made about general directories. Certain niche directories (someone already mentioned blogs) would need to allow deep linking for obvious reasons.
Yes my directory does deep links... BUT (hahaha) As usual, I'm a modding mofo... Let me present an example of how I represent the links. http://www.directorydump.com/health-and-fitness/hygiene/skin-care/ So while the link may be Deep, I wrote a MOD to circumvent the full path to show only what *I* wanted to show(e.g. only up to the .com .net .org .ws etc.. etc... whatever extension) to keep things nice and clean. However it does in fact link to it's respective URL which you'd notice by mousing over 'Trilastin Review' top title and looking at your status bar. Now when you goto 'Review Site' I have it set to show the full path. (which I will most likely be modding as well, but in time) Rob
