    Alexa rankings depend on how much traffic you receive, and pagerank is assigned on how many backlinks you have and how often you update your content.

    Many top SEO's suggest not to waste time worrying about pagerank.

    Alexa is not reliable. If your site's visitors are techies you alexa will jump like anything. This is more true after the alexa update.

    Someone above said submitting to bookmarking sites helps improving your alexa rank. As you know the majority users of bookmarking sites are techies. So this too is a reason.
