I have written a very easy tutorial for those who are switching their host but don't know how to transfer wordpress to the new server. Downloading the Wordpress files is not that difficult but moving database to a new server is a little technical and in my tutorial I have tried to guide you in a very easy & simple way. Read the full tutorial here: Tutorial - How to move Wordpress site to a new server or host I cannot post the full tutorial here because there are many images in the post and DP doesn't allow that many images in a single post. I hope you find the tutorial useful
This is good timing because im looking at moving my blogs some time soon, ive not visited your link yet but will today, thanks for putting it together.
Thanks glitto for detailed information about moving blog (WP) from one server to another. Its useful for everyone. Going to bookmark this page. DON.
Hi I HATE to say this and i dont intend to offend you @glitto, but the wordpress tutorial you have created is NOT entirley correct and will cause problems for users. You have missed a major part in the tutorial. The part is about the upload path of the wp-content folder as this will ALWAYS change if you move hosts. The user will have to edit a field in the wp_options table after importing the sql file into the new database. This field is: upload_path and will obviously need to be changed so that it refelcts the correct structure of the site, reflects where the wp-content folder is. If you or any one wants to look at a fantastic wordpress tutorial on how to move sites (this tutorial is not written by my, but i do find it very useful) i would suggest look at this article: http://www.jwrmedia.com/how-to/how-to-move-wordpress-to-a-new-server-or-host.html This tutorial explains the part which i was talking about and which you have missed. I would suggest editing your article so that it includes this information as well. Kind Regards mrhrk01 ~
^ I challenge you on that. I personally have moved my wordpress sites 4-5 times so far to different host and I used the same procedure I wrote in the tutorial. I don't know about the thing you have mentioned but my tutorial will NOT fail if you follow it properly.
@ Glitto The tutorial you have written is NOT entirely correct IF there are images in the articles in the wordpress site being moved is what i should have written. I merely wanted to point this out so other users will know this as it is a part of moving wordpress sites. And many wordpress site do use images which they insert into their posts etc. If the wordpress site you are moving has images which have been uploaded to the upload path within wp-content, then the user should modify the upload path to reflect that they have moved their site to a new host. And anyway if even they do not have images, its still a very good idea to modify the upload_path in case they do want to upload images in the future. @Lastbutnotleast Yes i am sure @Lastbutnotleast & @ Glitto I wanted to point this out so that when other people come across this thread they will have all the information they need to move their wordpress site(s) successfully.
