Duplicate Content Question

I've got a question relating duplicate content and how google will penalize you given this example.

You have one site targeting one niche and another targeting another niche. If you copy and paste the text from one site and use it on the other site but just change the keywords will you get penalized?

Instead of "the dog walked to the store" you put "the cat walked to the store".

    Is this bad?

There is no penalize really. The page with duplicate content would get less ranking thats all.

Sometimes people might take filters instead of penalties mistakenly. If there was a penalty, all of the article directory websites were going to get destroyed because they contain tens of thousands of duplicate pages and contents. Google looks at its archive to determine when it first found a site and it becomes the original copy and other copies might simply get filtered or not listed.

actually that example given by matter3 that will not penalize by google.

Bcoz Google penalize your website when u break the limit of copy like u copied 100% then u definitely penalize but copy smartly like 10 to 20 % u never face anything wrong.

I completely agree with you :D. The same is the case with article directories, where 70 to 80% should be unique content.

I think not penalized but doesn't pass any value to visitors as well. Visitors will found junk article with non-readiness.

Erm, I just wanted to ask, how much of an article needs to be duplicate for Google to flag it as duplicate content? I've seen some site rank quite well for using half of other people's content.

You WILL get penalized if the keyword is the only element you changed.

An educated guess would be more than 70%...as anything at least 30% unique gets indexed as original:)

That's why its good practice that when you write articles for your site, you DON'T send the same off to article directories. You may be flagged as one of the thousands of duplicates

This is my problem as well, a lot of sites copy my contents and get better rankings than mine. geeez~!

Duplicate contents are given less value on SERPS than the unique ones

Google just want New & Unique content. If you give duplicate content it doesn't looks your Website. Google give priority to unique content website only.

    It's not a penalty, it's a filter.
Because google doesn't want to serve up a page of identical results, it will filter out duplicates. It may not treat the genuine original as the originator of the content if one of the duplicates is on a more established site, with stronger backlinks.
In the case of the OP's situation, it's probably not really going to matter a hill of beans one way or the other if the content was orginal to him to start with.

It's a myth that there is a penalty, it's just about priortises. Google will always give priority to the original source
