Yea it could take a month or so depending. Or I should just say "whenever Google feels like it". That probably captures the attitude a bit better :)

Yes i agree it totally depends on Google. For my site www.cookfoodrecipes.com it got activated in 2-3 days. But you really got to be specific with your submission.

My experience is, if I put up a few links on ranked sites I have, include a robots.txt, and do a little PR before submitting a sitemap, about 2-4 hours before initial index and a few days before complete index (~10 pages).

    Hope this helps,
    Jon

There's a difference between getting crawled and getting indexed.

A sitemap submitted via Google webmaster central helps increase discoverability chances of your website, but it does NOT guarantee you of inclusion in Google's index.

Indexing depends to a great extent on

*the quality and quantity of backlinks to your domain and

    ** Presence of unique content.

If you have a backlinks from P6+ sites you can get indexed in less than 2-3 days.
On other side of spectrum, if you have no external backlinks it can take even up to 3-4 weeks to get indexed.

If it is important to get your site crawled quicker, and you have the money, you can pay for a forced crawl.
