All the google videos I've seen talk about naturally getting links to your site yet so many people buy links or sponsor wordpress themes. Can this get your site banned in google as these aren't natural links.

G has certain complex algorithms to know who has and who has not bought link From my experience, i had a website which was PR6 and got caught for selling links on homepage I dont know how they caught hold of it, but they did I lost PR, during the last 4 PR updates i am on PR0 But did it affect SERPs, nope, that website is No.1 for its primary keyword since 2 years in a competition of more than 1 million search results, rather in the last 6 months it has consolidated its position all around various local search engines of G
Not all paid links violate google guidelines, read this: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66736
All the sites which bought links are not punished by Google. It has it's own algorithm to decide which sites to punished. Always sell your links to related content sites.
Bought links are not natural links. On the topic of wordpress themes - lets take a look at those links. When you make something, it belongs to you. So that wordpress theme belongs to the person who made it. A backlink to the author is a way of protecting your copyright on that product. And its more then just wordpress, all forum themes have a backlink to the author. Whether its vbulletin, smf, mybb, IPB,,,, the themes will have a backlink to the company that made it. Same thing with drupal, wordpress, postnuke, mdpro, simple portal, Xoops and all of the other content management systems. When a theme has a link, its more like "Branding" then buying a link. The author of the theme owns it, has branded it, and deserves a backlink to help protect their property. With some software, you can not remove the link or the brandname unless you pay them for the brand free option. So there is a big difference between sponsoring a theme and buying a link.
Straight from the above article: That should settle things, if you read what Google writes instead of what ignorant people do, you'll realize that paid links are fine, as long as they are not purchased in an attempt to manipulate search ranking.
Google usually do not ban, but punishes by reducing pr, sometimes to pr0, for buying as well as selling links.
Your sites can't be banned for buying links. Google does not like it as this is a way of gaming their search engine and making your site appears more popular than it really is.
There are many websites that sell backlinks. Like this site backlinkSeller.de Why they dont get punished from google?
Technically, how could google judge which links are buying? But, just keep away from something like link farm! This would hurt you!
