I'd say about 750px min then not too sure on a max maybe about 1200px, but that would require use of %'s.

If you really have to make a fixed width layout i'd probably go for 800px width with a fancy background for 1024px+ users, but would depend on target users.

I agree .... using what you need in dimensions is quiet not that easy.... is 750 for your apps??? in seo I see more wide frames and tables out to 1000 k ... wow 1200 k... did not know you could stretch it out that far.... ... using dream weaver it makes it easy......... master seo in DW not many know how .... learn more about it ... you can dominate competition...... uri is unique for traffic ..............

I'd have about 750px minimum so it still looked good on 800px wide monitors.

However if you look at these display stats you can see a lot of people have a larger monitor than 1024px (in fact its a majority), so if you design to small then your page will look really thin on these sort of monitors.

Modern monitors can have widths such as 1366px, 1600px or even 1920px. However the larger the monitor I notice that people do not maximize their windows very often when using these monitors.

Designing using %'s allows for a decent amount of flexibility.

I dont think width is a major concern when comes to the data inside the site rather than the design. And your site is at its best. If you are more concerned about it and you need to make sure it functions based on the monitor width then width in % will be better.

800px is what you should usually have, otherwise use a percentage. You shouldn't have a fixed width over 800px.

Approx. 7% of my visitors have 800px wide monitors -- that equates to approx. 2500 page views per month. I think it would be a dis-service to them to require horizontal scrolling to view content when they visit my pages.

On most of my websites, I use 600 - 750 pixels, for readibility.

Not theory, fact. For example, if the page width is set at, say, 900 pixels then users with 800 pixel wide monitors will have to scroll horizontally to see right hand content (excluding of course blank margin space).

I see but how many people use Lap tops these days? many im sure ... I have a 22 inch monitor.... I also have a 15 inch dell laptop and the site opens fine in any browesr .... many of us here at dp recommend 100 to 1200 for seo .... when inded you should look at my template on a 15 inch monitor then tell me about the 800 pxi ... that is old school ..

It may be old school but the fact remains that many users do still have small monitor computers. If you do not mind that you may lose those visitors that is your choice. I wish to accommodate all of my visitors, but most of mine visit my web pages seeking information and really do not seem to care about layout except that it should provide logical arrangement and ease of navigation. The bottom line is that web pages should be designed for users not for authors.

That is what I use for my fixed width content pages (750px safely accommodates 800px monitors). I also use 100% fluid/flexible width on occasion.

I say don't go with anyting over 960 but 600 or 700 is too small. You gotta make the people with 15 monitors get off their ass and upgrade ;)

I'm still new at this, busy experimenting. So far I've had best results with widths between 800 and 900 px for HTML/CSS based sites, wider than that results can be unpredictable depending on which Browser you are using. That width provides a nice framework for your website or even your eBay ads.

:D The last laugh may be on you.

Most developed countries have an ageing, highly computer literate population. The game of Golf is usually more popular with older generations. As people enter middle age age they develop near vision problems associated with presbyopia, they need some visual correction in order to read or see things close-up. Some adjust their computer screen resolution to show large fonts etc. which impacts on website width.
