Can you trust anyone in the world of the internet?

I am so frustrated. In the past two years, I have been let down by designer, programmers, and even my host.

I have had designers design a front page to have me pay and never be heard from again.

I have one guy who does some designs for me but you can count on going weeks at a time without hearing from him.

I have lost thousands of dollars in getting php work done. And the two people who actually do it seem to do it at their leisure.

Dreamhost seems to have something wrong every 12 hours or so.

It just seems to me everyone has the same story. "Yes, I can do that , no problem" but really mean I am gonna get a down payment from you and go spend it and then when I need more money I'll do a little work and get some more work on you.

I work hard for the people who utilize me. Many times , it is people like the nice secretary in my office who herself just got ripped off for 600 bucks by a designer because she didnt know. So I am designer her site for free only to have Dreamhost go down everytime I need to log on.

    HELP ME!

    I also think its about:

you get what you pay for , I am not sure who you hired for the php or design or where you found them , but on this forum there are many great people, just make sure you check there itrader and you will see that many have great itraders

As far as dream host , thats like buying a package of meat with a bad expiration date...

With hosting its definalty you get what ou pay for ,

    Use the following hosting companys

Hostgator , rack space , the planet,

Hostgator seems to have the same plans and prices as Dreamhost. I think I am more concerned where the servers are located. California for instance has many outages.

BTW almost all the people I mentioned above, I met on here. Although I have met some really great people too!

I wonder if one of the biggest problems is that the internet can seem so anonymous? So the cowboys can just disappear with a quick name-change, and set up again to take in the next victim.

Whereas if you hire someone from your own locality, you at least have the recourse of moaning about them to everyone else who lives nearby, as well as better legal protections. There is just more accountability.

You need to be vigilant with checking references, and very cautious about online testimonials.

I am so frustrated myself today. I'm working on a new layout, I get ready to publish it and poof the apache2 servers on my chunk of dreamhost die... they come back 2 hours later, 20 minutes after that, there's a power failure !

    beyond frustrated!

Yea people like that really piss me off because it gives a bad name to designers. I create logos here and at SP.

I had one client who paid $100 for the logo and then paid $50 for work I had to still do. I could never just take my time, because they had spent money on me, so I felt it was my duty to complete the task.

But other people aren't honest as the good people on the Net. I just hate how unprofessional people can be at times.

2 admins I a had in 2 different forums they destroyed 5 months work, taking all the revenue that we would share and leaving.

Trust no one on the Internet except you know where they live, then you can go down there and smash their face.

Were these admins in forums you owned, or were you just participating in a revenue-sharing scheme? Odd that the same thing happened to you twice.

Did you lose all the posts, or was there anything salvageable in caches such as archive.org?

hostgator are good, see my blog webbrander.com for a review. Maybe you should select the people you work with better for example test them with small pieces of work before giving them a big project
