Why do people buy .info domains

Almost every .info domain on the internet has useless content.. and then people buy .info domains to resell here???

If you build a decent website and then resell with a .info domain its just pointless..

.info domains can be purchased for 99 cents or $1.99 each. So, a lot of people buy such domains.

Its not pointless, many .info sites are ranking well and getting the top traffic, just like .com, there is .info, and it has its own benefits.

Nothing wrong with them in principle, but they do reek of unprofessionalism.

And before that they were giving away for free. :)

I host a fair under of *.info sites. Usually it was because the client couldn't afford a regular priced domain for their site.

.info's value is degraded by goDaddy by setting up a dollar price, so its being used all around.

I agree here. They all have their place. .com, .net and .org are all abused in order to try and get ranking so regardless you have to fail back to the age 'ol comment, content is king.

I think the main reason people goto .info is to get keyword rich domains as more are available. I know the price doesnt attract me at all as opposed to getting keyword in my domain.

Admittedly I would prefer a dot com, but between a crappy dot com or a nice .info, I will settle there.

All of this also depends on your use. I am using dot info's for search engine driven traffic. If I were to advertise the old fashion way I would absolutely have a dot com because that is what the masses will default to. You could spend a million bucks advertising mydomain.info and 90% are still going to go home and type in mydomain.com

Is it pointless when they start making good money? The extension doesn't really matter when you are generating traffic with SEO. Development and marketing is what is important. I actually like developing PREMIUM .info names when the extension makes sense (1 or 2 keywords)

Becouse the desired name is free on .info and it's nothing wrong with the extension (as SEO point) so why not ...

Yes, you will find a lot of proxies with .info extension. It makes sense to buy a cheap .info domain if ultimately you have to sell it as a website and the extension doesn't matter much. You can also get some good keyword domains with .info.
