How effective is to submit any site let's say to 1000 directories

I was curious, how effective is submission to let's say 1000 free directories? I know it increases your PR. But is it very effective? Are these inbound links are HEAVY Weighted?

What is better submission to directories? or Link excahnge with related sites?
I know some people might say BOTH have to be done!

But what is the most important factor? In my opinion Link Exchange!

And one more question, when you do link exchange with related topic sites. Do i need to create a special page (LINKS.html) and have a link to it from the home page?

    Thank you

Directory submissions are very effective because your competition is not doing it on a regular basis. If you just keep track of all the new directories that come out and submit your site there, then you are way ahead of the pack. Oh, yeah the process is pretty time intensive.

One way linking is always effective, when you get your site listed on search engine friendly directory, it is recorded as back link (one way link) to your site, and its having more value than the link exchange.

Submitting is very effective , in 50% cases it gives First page listings - at least in my case

Seriously. If the site is less than 1 year old, you could get sandboxed.

Cook your directories link slowly. Meaning, do around 20-30 directories submission each month.

I don't know guys. The way SE's are going, we may be resorting to directories like we did in the old days before SE's even existed. I mean SE's are discounting links, getting spammed, dropping backlinks like hot potatoes, and unindexing pages. Do I seriously think this will happen? No. SE's are big business now and are too entrenched in the average user's way of life, but in all honesty they are getting less useful in my book. I mean, all SE's are is a big directory with a nice interface and automatic free inclusion.

I agree, search engine results are getting less and less usefull. But as long as they make monet providing these results nothing will change.
The next big thing will be 'user agents' where I train my own bot to filter SE results based on MY criteria.

From a pagerank perspective, I would say this is a guaranteed pagerank 4 if not 5.

Well let me try to answer you question as this has also interested me for quite a while .

Coming to the questions of submitting to say a 1000 free directories, well i have been doing that for a while and on my side, i have seen and increase in traffic, the PR would depend on what type of link back do you get as only a direct link would pass on a PR and on what is the PR of the page on which you listing appears...

well the only problem with free submission is that it take too long in some case for your submission to be approved...but then again it free and a good way to get link back and free traffic as a bonus.

you can get a handy list here best-web-directories(dot)com

As far as link exchange is concerned, it it better in terms of seo as Se's given more weightage for links from related sites....choose your link partners carefully and ya make a seperate page for your link partners as they can get many in number......

Also donot hesitate to exchange homepage links with established related sites as it can drastically increase your traffic and PR.

well for me myself, currently i am looking out for established sites for homepage link exchange

and finally if you want to establish your site.....BOTH have to be done ;-)

Well its a theory thats sort of true, google puts you in the 'sandbox' to see if your site is spam, thats why its important to only sumbit several links per week

My rule of thumb is do everything you can whenever you can.

As far as directories go - shell out the few bucks it takes to get people to submit for you. This frees up your time for more important matters IMHO.

This what im tring to do right as I have the same idea. Im hoping to get good search engine rankings and some traffic as well.

For now, I have collected over 4000 web directories and im stuck now. Im tring to find a script/software to scan the list and remove duplicate links. Im tring sitemap generators but none has done the jop yet.

Once the list is scaned. I will visit each directory, remove the dead one's, paid one's and the one's asking for a linkback.

I hope to end up with a list of at least 1000 web directories >> Free & No Backlink >>

This for sure is time consuming and god know's how long would it take to get the list done.
