Why Did I Fall So Drastically?

I launched a entertainment blog just two days before May. About 3 weeks ago, a page for an up& coming actress became the #1 google image search result. Suddenly, I went from 200-500 visitors a day to 3000-4000 a day and growing. I was stoked because a significant portion of that traffic were looking at multiple pages, but yesterday traffic dipped and I found that it's no longer #1 it's not even in the first 20 pages (I didn't look beyond that) I don't know how I got that result in the first place, but I know I haven't done anything to lose it. I've been getting more backlinks compared to reciprocal links for my site and it's doing ok w/o the ranking, but that ranking was good stuff. I just don't get how I just dropped off like that, is this normal? Did I get penalized?

Your site is new and such ups and downs in SERPs is very normal for new sites. Google give a New Content Boost to new pages and new sites, this boost helps them rank high in search results. But this boost is only temporary.

So most probably, your site went on top because of this new content boost. In order to get a stable position in SERPs, you will have to get some solid backlinks.

Yes, this usually happens with New sites. You will get your rankings back as long as you keep on building backlinks and updating content.

I have a one year old site that jumps from page 1-7 for a keyword last three months.

new sites get an initial credit to prove themselves. that the time we should spend building links to hold the position as much as we can.

Thanks for the responses/explanations. It makes sense, so basically Google giveth and taketh away. I update daily with anywhere from 8-16 original stories, the rest of my time is spent trying to find quality directories to submit to or commenting on related blogs that allow website links, and I get backlinks from PR1-3 sites often. Oddly enough traffic has picked up big time today, seems my site is the 5th result on the first page on Google for something Michael Jackson related. Weird and exciting seeing my site up there with ABCnews, TMZ, Yahoo! Music, etc.
