Hy there guys, i see that more and more of you are making their own directorys theese days, so i thought you might me interested how ti generate more traffic for your directory.
Here are the methods i use, if anyone has something to add, please so here. here it goes:

1.One of the best sources for traffic so far, for me is : Directorycritic.com, if you are not on his list...get there quick, usually if you post your directory in the announcements forum he will pick you up himself, if not, go to his site and send him an email.

2.Another good source of traffic in this forum, Digitalpoint.com, but most of you already know that being here. Put your directory in your signature, and stay active, traffic will come.

    3. Iwebtool.com is a good source of traffic too, i get decent amount of traffic from there, they also have a top list, you put some code in your page and refer traffic to they, they refer traffic to you....it's a win win situation.

    4. Be on the vilesilencer.com list ....asap. go to his forum ,join and post your directory, you will get traffic from there, and if you are a free directory he will add you to his free directory list, and you will get a lot more traffic from different sites that use his list.

    5. http://www.addurl.nu/ ..another list of directorys, used usually for manual directyory submission, it's a good idea to be listed there too. Just send him a message and he will add you. They send decent ammount of traffic.

    6. One last source of traffic that is usually left out is top directory lists. there are several around that will send you traffic, and they continue to grow and send more and more traffic. Most of you don't want to join topsites because they have to put a little piece of code in their page, but what's the deal?! it doesn't cost you anything and it will bring you traffic....my oppinion is list in as many topsites as you can...you only win from this one.

Here are some topsites lists that you can try:

    a) the best so far is : http://www.topdirectories.info/ .. it sends the most ammount of traffic but it usually exceeds the bandwith limit sooner that 30 days, so the last days of the month it will be offline...too bad.

    b) another good one is : http://www.snurff.com/ unfortunately the owner decided to make it paid so now you have to pay 16$ to be listed there...i got the mail a few days ago...

    c) another topsite is: http://topdirectorys.com/ this one's mine, working on it hard, and it's getting bigger and bigger every day. It's generating decent ammount of traffic so far.

    d) another one is : http://top.seo-links.org/ a good topsite, that will generate some traffic, a little small though, but it will grow.

    e) last one i have so far: http://www.linkdirectories.org/ fairly new i think, just listed there myself, they recently made a software that allow people to submit to directorys in their list easily..this could become a good source of traffic.

That's what i have so far...if anyone has something to add, please do.

    Good post Spyrit!

Agree with you on lots of points. Here are some more directory resources that will drive visitors to your directory:

    - seocompany.ca, best-web-directories.com, directorylist.org, web-directories.ws, info-sales.co.uk, directory-owners.com, and directorysource.info.

Create quality content to your directory and you'll also receive traffic from search engines.

    Excellent post!

I do have to wonder - I am tracking about 10 different directories for sale at the moment over at Sites for Sale. I know the answer to this - but isn't the directory market oversaturated??

I would say yes, it is way oversaturaded with basic "script/templated/duplicated category" directories. The key is to have something that differentiates yours from the rest. That could be quality, added features, value, etc. It's really just like any other website, if you put work into it then you will rise above all the low quality copies.

Excellent point - with enough development you can rise above the rest - maybe with an emphasis on the marketing of the directory so it benefits the users - as the lead article highlights - more traffic.

    Run-on sentence... Sorry.

A method I saw another guy using (and one I intend to steal) is to list any freeware/software downloads you create in your own directory. For example, if you make a new MP3 codec, put it's download link in your directory under the Music and Software categories. People will then have to go through your directory to get the software. It also make managing the download link a bit easier.

But this means that you have to constantly add free stuff to directory categorys. Where are you going to get all that? And why would be people be interested to take them from your directory rather than from a site that deals with that alone?

Put stuff YOU create in your directory. I do a fair bit of scripting and coding in my spare time. Rather than putting up a tiny page for yet another simple script, I can zip the script and put it in my directory as a download. Then when people decide they want my really simple contact script (for example), they go to my directory and click the link for it and receive the zip file. Plus, if I get the software listed on several free download sites like download.com or freesofts, they'll link to my download page which will get me some nice deep links into my directory.

You pretty much covered the bases.

I get a little traffic from link exchanges with other directories.

I would add my own PR3 topsite to the list of ways to promote. I have 35 directories signed up already and it is free for the first 50. Get listed on my directory topsite.

Looking ok your topsites...one thing though, i don't think that making it paid is a good idea ;) noone will sign, especially when it's new and doesn't have much traffic to send.

My thought is to make it paid when it gets more popular, currently I just sell sponsored links on the left column for $32 per year.

So mine should bring 4x traffic than yours... :p
Don't think directories listed deep in approciate category can bring any traffic. Only featured or site wide ("sponsor" listings in my dir) can do some.
In my LinkForever I put some SEO tools and articles, it can also help a little.
