I'm just giggling over this so called "Mr. X" .. Newt Gingrich? Sarah Palin? Who is this Republican savior going to be? Obviously it's a long ways off but I have a good feeling that Obama is going to win re-election in a landslide in 2012. Not because of any nefariousness but because I really believe this country is going to be on a much better course by then. Positivity is a good thing to feel after 8 years of knowing we were going down the toilet. --- I realize of course that this is just a hypothetical - I just think it's so far off base from any reality that I can imagine as to make it hard to even guess as it. Perhaps if it wasn't presented in such a politically slanted way it'd be easier to take it seriously.
There are far too many laws, rights, checks and balances, etc in the US for what's happening in Iran to happen here. Obama probably will win by a landslide unless by some miracle Republicans get it together. His whole campaign is about screwing over the 5% to win favor with the 95%. Good luck convincing the 95% that coveting your neighbors' things is wrong.
Here is a new thread just for you Zibblu: Let's fast forward to 2012, I'll give you a scenario, and tell me what you would do in this situation. Obama has decided not to run again for President. Former President Bush is running against Mr. X in the 2012 presidential elections. Many of us, probably the majority of us, love Mr. X. We think he's wonderful, and every thing America needs. We all run out to vote for Mr. X, but the results come back that Bush has won, and there is proof that government officials supporting Bush committed fraud to vote him in office. We are infuriated and go out to protest, but Bush has control of the military and we are beaten and arrested. Is there anything we could do about it? Zibblu, this thread wasn't really about Obama per se. The events in Iran have just been in the back of my mind, and I've been wondering what they should do, and what we would do if we found ourselves in the same situation. Not that we would, this is just kind of a weird "what if" kind of a thread.
My point was that Al Gore was unable to get a recount when it mattered because they were scared that he may have won. What would they have done had he got a recount and George Bush had already been sworn in? There is no way they would have reversed the decision so it didn't matter. The point was that all George Bush Snr's buddies in the Senate would not support Al Gore's claim that there may have been some form of miscount and order a re-count when it mattered. Still, I think Al Gore has made much more of an impact by not being President than he would have by being President
Hmm.... Again, you might want to check your facts. Your point is well taken. Mr. Gore didn't get his Supreme Court mandated recount. However, there were several attempts at a recount immediately following the elections. There were also several extensions granted for those recounts. The deadlines simply weren't met. I'm afraid Al Gore's biggest hurdle was the Florida Division of Elections, not the Supreme Court. What do you do when people just can't count? Ah yes. He continues to teach us the true meaning of the word hypocrisy.
How American is this? Absentee ballots from US soilders were not counted. 1) During the Florida recount after the 2000 Presidential election, many localities had trouble determining the date of postmark on military absentee ballots. The dates were frequently illegible for one reason or another, so local election officials simply discarded the ballots. Many military ballots were not signed or notarized. Again, hundreds and perhaps thousands of military votes were excluded. 2) In a recent letter to President Bush, Theresa M. Petrone, a Democratic member of Chicago's Board of Elections, predicted that thousands of military absentee ballots would once again go uncounted. Petrone asked that the federal government force states to count absentee ballots until 14 days after the election, provided that the ballot was signed by Election Day. But this would require federal legislation, and there's little chance of any legislative fix passing Congress in time. 3) According to the Associated Press, 30 percent of military voters who requested absentee ballots in 2000 did not receive them in time to have their vote counted. In 2000, roughly 250,000 military voters applied to vote absentee. http://www.cfif.org/htdocs/freedomline/current/in_our_opinion/military_absentee_ballots.htm Everyone will be driving a GM Volt
There are checks and balances in place that can assist in the matter. The President can be impeached and would be if this were to happen.
bogart, for one there are voting officers and voting campaigns on military installations outside of the US up 6-12 months before the election, with guidelines from every state posted in the unit areas. Soldiers that don't follow the guidelines don't get their vote counted, its clearly spelled out, it is the fault of the servicemember not the states (most of the time). Not only that, people complain about it, but guess what? The US Military is overwhelmingly republican/conservative. If Obama did that crap the most of the military will desert and refuse to attack fellow Americans. IT just isnt' going to happen anymore. And you think liberals will join the military? Most of them don't even know the meaning of work, it woudl be a landslide. This is why I live in TX.
And you people assume too much. You think he's not stacking all this crap in his favor already? I mean serisously, he got a tax evader appointed as the freaking Secretary of the Treasury.
I believe that is why the military absentee ballots have so many problems. All you need is 200 rounds. If you expend that much ammo chances are you will be dead or the other people next to you will be dead and you can pick-up their ammo. Another thing to consider is that ammo is heavy. A 1000 round crate of 7.62 rounds weighs approx 58 pounds.
