Just a quick question. Is it better for SEO if your server is located locally? say you have a .com.au or a .co.uk - will the site be ranked better in local Google if you have hosted your website locally?
Yes. It is also beneficial to have the majority of your backlinks from sites in your chosen location (domain extension & hosting).

I believe there is an advantage, but the factor is too small to make a huge difference. So don't bother over it. Remember the 80/20 rule, and do the 20% thingss that results in 80% of our income. Get it?
not a myth, but IMO it is too small a factor to bother about. once you have a ccTLD, Google will assume that your site belongs to that particular country. the location of your servers won't really matter then.
