How many posts before going online should a blog have?

Is starting a blog out with just one post considered a good practice? Or should one wait until they have a somewhat solid amount to put up before launching their blog? Are there any guidelines for how many posts are good (minimum) per week? Or per month?

Also curious about using custom themes vs. the free themes that are out there. Is using a free theme frowned upon, even if it's just used initially while fine tuning a custom one? Should I just wait until I've got a custom one done? Or not worry and just jump right into blogging with a free theme for a while?

Blog with 10 posts good IMO before going online. After that you need to update it twice or thrice in a week for better results in terms of everything.

Every blog starts with one post. Rather than waiting to post them all at once start posting them once a day. This way you start getting crawled by spiders, and its better for your SEO if you are consistently adding new content every day.

Does frequently adding more to a blog alone help SEO? Or is it only going to be helping SEO if the frequent updates happen to also be drawing in more readers?

Its all inter-connected: the more you update your blog the better you will rank in the search engines, which should bring more visitors to your blog.

Like Don said, just keep updating your content every few days and you should be rewarded.

    Good luck!

    I will do, and thanks.

Now what about the blog theme issue? One of my blogs I all ready made a custom theme for, but the other I'm still working on one for. Does anyone think not using a custom theme for a while would really hurt much?

I'm really not a big fan of using the free themes myself, but I don't know how much it really impacts a blogger to be using them.

Going online is not the question. Even with a single post you can go online and build PR with it. The bigger questions is, how much posts do you need to earn, like for example from Adsense.

For adsense, I would suggest you have a minimum of 50 posts to bring in decent organic traffic.

You can use free available theme as of now as you are starting your blog and once your custom theme ready you can use it. No need to worry about that.

Yeah, I've just started using adsense and so far, I've had a semi-decent number of blog views for a new blog with a very very niche sort of audience (though I think it helps that the blog though new itself is part of a website that's not completely new), but no adsense clicks. Good to know it sometimes takes quite a while before adsense really starts getting clicks.

My next blog is going to be more diverse, so I won't have such an incredibly small niche to be dealing with, which should hopefully help some. It still will have a niche (I'm focusing on the county I live in and surrounding areas), but not a horribly narrow one I should hope.

You should post your blog immediately so, at the very least, it can get indexed and begin the aging process.

Guidelines of course vary, but most of the recommendations I've seen fall somewhere between 3-5 days/week.

Themes are irrelevant to search engines and people alike. It's all about the information on your blog.

Just start blogging, if you insist on a custom theme, you can always migrate your blog later. :)

    Good luck!

Everything has to be built. I see nothing wrong with one post. However if you are going to throw up a single post then fill it with ads or adsense you are doing it wrong. You create your blog over time. What's the point in throwing up 1 or 5 or 10 posts and then just calling it good?

I actually wrote about this exact topic in the past over at ahnternet. Maybe you'll find the info there helpful. Although the article is nearly a year old, I still believe that starting with no posts is the best way to go. If you're looking for maximum exposure without losing so much, it's definitely the way to go.

I would have to agree with this. It's not the going online part because It's not bad to go online with just several posts. But you won't get much either.

Also, if you plan to promote (PR) your blog, then I suggest at least having 10 posts before inviting people to go visit your blog. Even if you have the best blog design, readers would be easily turned off with a blog that has only several posts. It would not be enticing.

Additional points if you have a Best Contents List or Popular Posts to engage your first time readers. Goodluck :)

I think you should have at least 10 posts before going online. If users like your posts they want to read more so if you have only 1-2 posts they probably won't think that it's worth of coming back to this blog... And after reading these 10 or some of them they will become interested and probably come back.

I would suggest to have at least 15 posts before you go online, IMHO that is enough for a month (of course it will depend on your niche also)

Till you provide good and quality content it doesn't matter if you start with 1 post and go online. Quality matters and not quantity.

I have started all my blogs with one post. As someone else said it looks better if you post daily and it's more natural to just start a blog then to have a ton of post ready to go.

That said you can write them all at once if you don't think you'll have time then set them up to publish at least once a day.

themes are not erelavant some themes are optimized better, and the looks of a site make a first impresion, also dont neglect the pics with tags you can get 100 hits aday with just you images, post 3 aday every day, ya gota give the spiders a reason to visit your site.

and forget about adsence for now,, adsence on a good site converts at aroun 1 to 3% so for every 100 hits thats 1 to 3 clicks at 5 to 30 cents aclick depending on your subject youll see you need traffic and lots of it to make hundreds every month
