How many links per website to external are too many?

I read somewhere that google was penalizing websites for too many links going to a single external website.

I’m not talking about per page, but for instance if you put a single link to an external website on every page of your website. Does google penalize this saying that is unnatural?

If so, how many links per website *NOT* webpage but website going to a single external link is too many?

If you ask for external links 10, if you ask for internal 100.

They cant penalise you, the links will just carry less weight if they look to be there to manipulate serps.

Google crawler stops looking at links on a page (not a website) after about 100 links, but you're not penalized at all.

If you link to a site from 50 pages then linking to it from another 500 is going to make no difference at all.

Keep your links natural and avoid using external links in the footer and sidebar if you can.

Oh? How come not in the footer or side bar? In every project that I do, I always put the link to my main homepage in the footer, shouldn't I be doing that?

Me too I usually use footer and sidebar to give external links. And if the minimum internal link is 100 how about sitemap? is that mean that you need to create more than 1 sitemap if you have more than 100 pages in your site

I was talking about external links. A bunch of external links in the sidebar or footer makes it look like you are selling links and will devalue the link juice your site can pass.

There is no set number of internal links you should have. A sitemap shouldn't just be a list of all the pages on your site. It should be a list of all the main sections of your site and each section should then have a good enough linking structure to get the internal pages spidered.

    Just to reiterate
I am talking about external links site wide.
A footer is a perfect example of this.
For instance “This website is hosted by blah.com” or “web design by blah.com”

Why is this? Didn't plan on having it on no 500 pages, or even 50 but just for reference.
I was simply choosing the most popular pages on the site and making sure I was putting a link on them. This was less then 25 pages, but it would grow in the future.

But the more links the better no? The more PR passed to the site. Yes it does "leak" PR to that website, but this is precisely what I am trying to do.
Also gives the site a large number of links, and gives you the chance to mix up the anchor text.

There's nothing wrong with having more than 100 links. Google just won't bother following them after the first 100.

Google does follow after 100 links. Make the site for your users rather than google.

Don't waste time "counting" links. Build it so the vistors can navigate easily. If you hamper user-experience for the sake of a magic number you got in a forum, you will not be happy with the end result.
