The last bit should be achievable by getting some really good quality links from authority sites within your niche.

There is no exact answer to your question as what you want depends on many things. First, your content should be unique. Secondly, your inward links should be from quality sites. thirdly, stay update about changes which you or others observe in Google's ranking criteria.

@KathyMillerL222, 948,000 competitors? How many competitors do you really have? Search your keyword in Google like this: "keyword" having the keyword in quotes will give a phrase match and show a much more accurate number. Depending on the number of actual competitors and the sites currently ranking a few simply changes to your on page SEO may be all you need.

I would be happy to take a look at your website and offer advice if I notice room for improvement based on the way your website is currently optimized internally.

    What is your domain name?

I don't think it matters that how many competitors are there. The thing is when your page get indexed it already left many competitors behind it. It would not help you if you start permoting your site against that keyword which don't have much traffic around it.

What do you mean by authority sites???? Did you just copy this from somewhere else?

Of course the amount of competition for a given keyword determines the amount of work you need to put in to rank high for that word.

Do you mean to tell me that you need the same amount of work to rank for a keyword such as Basketball Tips, with a keyword such as Poker or Money or Weight loss.

Not really! In fact you are touching extreme boundries. the general terms have already been facing tough competition. So now there is need to be specific in choosing your keywords.

If you haven't already done so, make sure your keyword is mentioned in the title tag of your home page, then keep building links to the page with the anchor text set to the keyword. You might see a little boost simply by sticking a link to your page in your sig here at DP.

    Hi Kathy,
I would recommend article submissions with two anchored links in the resource box, directory submissions, social bookmarking submissions, commenting at related blogs, and build a few support pages for your monetized site, such as squidoo lens or hubpage. There are even more choices, all of them free, just takes time.

I agree with Brian that having your keyword in your title tag of your homepage is important. I also recommend putting a link to your index on every page of your website.

Perhaps chasing top 3 on a single keyword is not as important as you think?

One of our sites has less than 5% of total search traffic from two single word "keywords". That means over 95% of searches were gnerated by the other 2657 phrases entered by users.

And, SE traffic is less than 40% of total traffic.

Sometimes focusing too much on a single key word (or two) represents energy and resources better used elsewhere...

A site I setup back in march was stuck in the sandbox between the #40 and the #50 spot for six weeks. I took the following steps and it broke out of that rut and 7 days later I was on Page 1.

It's now two weeks later and I'm still not settled. Ranking between #3 and #5 on any given day.

    Here's the steps:

    1) Setup 3-Way Linking co-op - you can get set up with this for free at LinkBuildingSolutions.com

    2) Widely Distributed Articles - I dropped three articles via a distribution service (ArticleMarketer.com) that had my URL worked into the text version of the author's resource box and my anchor text link in the HTML version.

    3) Angela's Backlinks - found her resource here. I bought 5 back issues and started working through them. I used some of the sites to build a link wheel while I was at it. I only got through the first 5 packets and have 2 left including this month's.

    4) Bookmarking Demon Run - I already had Bookmarking demon so I bookmarked the heck out of the site over two weeks time.

    5) Forum Signature links - found a forum related to the niche, put my link in the signature and posted a few times.

    It's time-consuming but it works.

Why target the #3 position only? Aim even higher. You should target being number one. Just keep on building quality links for your site. Do forum posting, directory submission, link exchange, etc.

Try to analyze links of top three competitors, if you are lacking behind because of back links than it will definitely help you to get on top three position.
