Lyrics websites...

    How profitable do you think Lyrics websites are?

    I suspect that people visiting a lyrics site are just there for the lyrics and not in a mood for surfing and to wonder around clicking on ads or purchasing products... but then again I do not know the actual statistical behavior and much the results...

    And the content is also pretty far away from the money markets (financial, medical...)

    I am just curious... what are your thoughts?

    Looking forward to an informative, thoughtful and interesting discussion...

    Thank you all...

    Personally, I think they're a dime a dozen. If you can't do something different (in any niche), don't do it at all. Just my $.02. If you have a unique idea, that's another story.

    You are correct;

    And some artists/labels/... do request them to be taken down and some sites do comply...
    but this is not a major issue...

    yes, that's true, but the music industry doesn't do anything about it since it's free publicity for all the artists.

    ================================

    Lyrics sites can be profitable. I earn a good $x,xxx per month from mine and I expect that to be increasing. I think having a community and for some way for the users to be involved helps a lot. I get nearly a mid-high xxx,xxx pageviews per month and my site isn't that old. It's just about how you design it and how you market it.

    Actually, the music industry is notorious now for protecting their copyrights. It just means they haven't found you yet, or it's not a top priority yet. ;) Publicity isn't the way they're going to look at it. I wouldn't risk it.

    I haven't seen a single lyrics site get shutdown yet.....I'm still waiting for that. Plus, I have agreements with radio stations and various music groups, so I'm not too worried about it.

    As long as you're legally covered then go for it. But if you're not, you're violating the law, whether others have been shut down or not... that's the point. You never know when they'll suddenly light a fire under the issue.

    I would be too sared of the legal matters mentioned above to attempt a lyrics site, as dumb as the legal issues are.

    The lyrics site market is saturated, however you can make money with anything if you put your mind to it. I'd recommend studying your possible competitors and seeing how you can improve. Maybe find a niche in the market?

    I run a lyrics website and to be honest, I make more money off ring tone affilates than i do with contextual ads (Im using YPN).
