I was going through my stats yesterday and noticed that somebody had entered a certain term into Google and arrived at my site, so I went to investigate.
Much to my surprise, a search for "blue widgets" shows my site smack dab at number one of 450,000!
The site is a forum, and it is less than a month old.
    How can this be possible?

    Talk about avoiding the sandbox...LOL

congrats, having success with google early is rare.

however, is blue widgets even a keyword. It isn't even listed in inventory.overture.com

The term "Widgets" is a generic representation of ANY given keyword, without actually giving up the actual term on a public forum.
Some may say Green Widgets, Red Widgets or even Pink Widgets- none of them mean a thing. = )

I suppose if you're targetting SEO's and webmasters, then actually ranking for 'widgets' might be a good idea ;).

Anyone could get listed #1 in google for blue widgets if they wanted to. Being #1 for a non-competed for keyword is worthless, especially when the keyword itself has no value because no one searches for it. Getting #1 out of 450,000 results is a cake walk.

If you only got one visitor from the search term then its not counted as competitive and you won't be sandboxed for it.

I agree, it's only competitive terms that you get sandboxed it. On one site that's about 2 months old I'm pulling in about 400 visitors a day from google as it has lots of content for some very niche terms.

The sandbox doesn't mean you're not going to rank at all in Google, you just won't hit and competitive terms.

Yes. thats true, and as Claymation mentioned, the competition for that keyword was only 450,000 .

That's why the new site was showing @ #1 .

Also, if the key term is occuring in your domain name, it would not be difficult to rank high for it.

It happens. Someone submitted a celebrity fansite in my directory. Now when that keyword searched in google, my site comes up first and his 11th.

DP is famous for it, never post your keyword, especially for a thread title, it'll rank far higher then a new site for any search term.

But the question is now that how worthy this listing is for your website because your website is a forum but you rank high for a search term "blue widgets" I searched for this term in Overture and Wordtracker and it gets 0 searches so its useless to rank high for this search term.
