I am looking into purchasing a .org name, but want to use it commercially. Is there any type standard in the web industry that says .org's can't be used for profit?
I own and manage several .org and .info names and they all work just as good as my .com and .com.au names. Go right ahead. Col
No one's policing .org's use! In my opinion, .org domains are given more preference over commercial names...just like .edu over a .net
I'm an eBusiness adviser in the UK. .Org names have the historical connection to not for profit organisations, but this is no longer the case. There are no laws dictating the use of domain name extensions other than in the case where some countries do not let you register with their Top Level Domain Extension unless you have a presence within that country. Is the dot.com name not available for your site? I'd recommend purchasing it if it is as 1. It protects your trademark 2. Most people by default try www.yoursite.com when trying to remember your domain name 3. A country specific domain name, such as .co.uk gives you better rankings in localised search engines results, important if you think you'll be trading internationally. There's no reason why you cant have a number of addresses mapped to the same web site. Its only considered SPAM if you have a site for each of the addresses with exactly the same content. Tip for you - if you want to get round Yahoo! Directory $200 registration fee, submit the site with the .org name with content specific to your industry, then once it appears in the directory, go and add in the selling function. Yahoo! don’t charge for non-commercial registrations. Good Luck.
