How do I record a video with my webcam?

I know how to post a video on line, both on Youtube and also using opensource code on my personal web site. This is not what I am talking about. How does one go about recording a video? I have all the hardware now. I used to have a webcam that only worked on XP but now I have upgraded. I have bought a web cam for my new VISTA computer.

I am sure there are some web masters out there that know how to do this. It must be a common thing. It must be an easy thing. I mean, there are many people who decide it is cool to ramble on about stupid meaninglessness and record it and post it to YouTUbe. So, how is it done? Is it as simple as finding the right feature of the VISTA operating system that allows you to do it?

Most webcams come with proprietary or free software. Did you install the cd that came with your webcam?
Also, as ArLinD suggested, there's also google :)
Try something like, 'webcam video software'.

This may sound stupid but have you tried reading the manual or researching on the net?

There are a number of good free tools for recording Webcam videos. You can use Windows Movie Maker, which comes with Windows XP and Vista, but I prefer to download apps that are geared specifically for integrating with the various chat apps like MSN, Yahoo, etc. ( just google it )

i like to recommend you read you manual its help you lot .. or just goolge it
and if still you want any help pm me i like to help you

    good luck

Try downloading YouCam. It came with my computer and it works just fine and saves in a few useful formats.

You see, the last cam I got did not have any software. So, apart from the driver for Vista, I figured that this one would be just as featureless.

But, after going back to the users guide and reading past the first couple of pages that describe installing the drivers off of the mini cd, I found that it actually DOES install software I can use.

I will check it out along with your suggestion for YOUCAM.

The only silly thing here is your post about this while we all know that that are hundreds of tutorials you can find on Google :)

I got the video capture to work with the software that came with the device. But no sound. I am using a mic that is seperate from the cam. That might be part of a rub.

    But there is more issues.

The cam saves the captured video in an AVI file format and so far that seems to be useless. It does not run at all in Real Player.

YouCam is not open source and it is a commercial software. Anything out there open source that you can recommend.

Last year I remember an open source audio player I once used.

Nah Uh, the only silly thing is your silly posts, Mayor Silly Mc. Sillyman of Sillytown. :p Awwww, did I hurt your feeling-wheelings and you just ah-gosta come back with this manly retort?

Apart from Googling the hundreds of tutoials for stuff that may or may not work for devices that may or may not be phased out for operating systems that may or may not apply to me, a smarter option is to post on web forums where I can directly ask a direct question and get an immediate or almost immediate answer tailored specifically to my question. WHich I have done and which has so far been progressive and I have made head way.

It depends on the hardware , the webcam itself.
There are catchy menus if the webcam support video record.
Unfortunately some low class webcam don't support video record. Good luck to you .
