how to redirect my indexed web urls ?

    hi i recently upgraded my website from joomla 1.0 to newer version of joomla 1.5 now after i restored all content and articles i am getting different urls different form urls indexed in google now problem is 70% of traffic comes from google and with new urls i already got more than 5000 404 errors in google webmaster , is there any way i can redirect urls to new urls i tried my best to edit new urls but both jooml 1.0 and joomla 1.5 links are completely different is there ant .htaaccess method for that ?
    any help / suggestion will help alot

    use sh404 sef , it will solve your problem .

    thats essential component i am using that right now but it uses different tactics in joomla 1.5 , right now i am using old method of redirecting urls by .htaaccess method like adding :

    Redirection /abc.html http://www.abc.com/newabc.html
    its working fine but lengthy process to manage more than 2000 indexed urls :(
