has anyone used OpenX Ad Server <http://www.openx.org/en/products> for their site? if so, what is your evaluation of the product? any comments, pros and cons are welcomed. thanks in advance!
It's a good tool but the learning curve is a bit steep. Once you get beyond that it becomes fairly easy to work with and is a great and FREE valuable tool.
I'm using google's admanager (free), it's even more complicated then openx lol. It won't take any of your server performance though, if you have a busy site and don't want to spend money on a dedicated ad server this is a great way.
i hear good things about openx ... but i wonder if you have huge traffic if they will ask you to leave ... it's difficult to imagine them adding 2 or 3 servers just to handle me for free
Openx is the best ads managment. i am using it since it was called phpadsnew !! then changed the name to Openads, and again now to OpenX. its a very good if you want to take over ad zones many pages geo targetting etc. its for big sites and many pages, and its not easy to work with, you need to learn and to understand how is it works.
Sure, OpenX is free, SmartPPC EVO isn't. Everyone can compare the EVO features + users interface ala google with openx. You can find free and commercial software in every sphere. Everyone knows the difference. I know that orbitscripts is permanently developing many addons for EVO. (publishers module, for instance) That will help to get more revenue for webmasters who use EVO on their sites in the nearest future.
Good question. No, they will not ask you to leave, instead they start charging for their service. It is a very steep price, $1800 to put you on a dedicated server. But the great thing about OpenX is that you can choose between the hosted version, or you can download it and run the same software on your own server.
I have been using the OpenX server on my sites for almost two years and found it fairly easy to use, although buggy at times. Then I heard that OpenX has starting allowing people to host ads via their site. I tested how fast ads from my server displayed versus their server. Mine was much faster, no doubt because theirs is serving so many sites and mine isn't. Just a few weeks ago, I started testing Google AdManager. It's not intuitive at all, even so frustrating that I almost gave up on it. Then I figured it out and found that it serves quickly and efficiently. So if you don't want the hassles of managing your own server, and you have the patience to figure out AdManager, I'd suggest you give it a try.
I've recently started using Open X and I can honestly tell you it's great (given the features I'm surprised it's free) Some might find it confusing at first but watch the Video Tutorial and the rest is like connecting lego pieces. The program can be buggy at times but works great
Yeah, they are great for me. OpenX was buggy for me too, but after I changed my hosting to a dedicated hosting, it works smoothly now.
Do those of you that are using it recommend installing it onto my own server or running the hosted version? Thanks, Tim
Going to throw this out there - I've been considering to set this up FREE on our hosting cloud and let users sign up FREE to run their ads. I know this is a self-hosted system too but do you think that you guys/other people would like a free hosted version of it as well??
