to me it seems like google is becoming a Monopoly of the internet, taking down one company at a time with their great programs. Google adsense is soaring against most other companies, the only one that is close is YPN. Google Adwords is the same. Now Gbuy sticking it to Paypal and on other threads their are talks of Google ATM card, that would really shut paypal down lol. They are not really a monopoly because defenition of monopoly is: but this is the internet so its a bit different. What do you guys think?
Nah. They overcame everything (Yahoo, MSN, DogPile) etc all on their own. They did it right. Now they're using their power to expand their money making potential. What company doesn't do that? It's just like you start a new website because you want to tap into a new niche and make more money .
I am more worried about its major product which is search engine itself.Such large market share will really suck after 2-3 years when 90% webmasters and seo will become helpless. Monoply is always bad
one thing is if they become too big, the government might not stop em anyway since google pays their taxes and the more earnings, the more tax money to the government.
company/business which takes over every market/type of business, does not give chances to other businesses. if you were to start of a search engine right now, who would use it??? nobody since google beats your engine by a million!
Google's not a monopoly at all. In a monopoly a consumer has no choice but to got to the big guy. You have choices. Don't use google. Google's leading and the most popular in it's field, but that doesn't make anybody a monopoly. everyone and their mother in the Web2.0 world wants to be purchased by google.
While Its true that Google is the leader in search they really haven't been able to transfer that lead to other areas. They are still behind youtube in video. They haven't been able to really expand to other years of advertising other then search ads. They failed in selling advertising in newspapers and magazines so I don't think google has a monopoly
To expand on this: Oil companies are a monopoly. They set the prices, they are few and numbered. They run the oil market. We have no choice. Google leads and others willingly follow. Those that don't innovate fall behind (MSN, Yahoo, etc). Sucks to be them. What google does with all the fans they have? That's up to google. either way, you have a choice as to whether you use google to search, gmail for emails, etc. you have options online. On the other hand you're much more limited when it comes to pumping gas into your car.
"Oil companies are a monopoly. They set the prices, they are few and numbered. They run the oil market. We have no choice." Not to be anally retentive or anything…. …..Actually, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) is an association of oil producing countries set up with the express purpose of influencing oil prices by controlling supplies. It is called a cartel, not a monopoly, because, well it’s a cartel, not a single entity. HOWEVER, it can have the same effects as a monopoly ito price setting, deliberately manipulating demand and supply and most of these activities are harmful to the consumer and economy in general as neither cartels or monopolies are known for their altruism.. FYI Opec = Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.
I will say that Google poses an interesting dilemma... they are a price setter in that really than can petty much dictate minimum PPC and other rates without fear of losing too many 'customers', so in that sense they are rather monopolistic, BUT as was wisely pointed out - there are very good 'substitutes' in the form of Yahoo and MSN etc and therefore people don't have to be price takers... so yes it is different and might make an interesting dissertation for some budding Economics PHD...
Yes, they are using theyre power (influence) from the "search engine business" for attracing people in other kind of online business, as gmail , g analitics... adsense ,etc isn't this anti-trust?!
I think Google had some good years but I've noticed the gap being closed significantly during the past few years or so. I'm referring to search engine traffic. In other areas, all 3 have their own strengths but from a web publisher perspective, I'd like to see more competition for adsense
The 5 Major US oil company's only control 3% of the worlds oil reserves. We don't have a choice in the price of oil and neither do the large oil company's. Oil is a global commodity with the price set by the market
I agree very much. If they are trying to follow the path of microsoft trying to monopolized everything in their field then more people will hate them too like microsoft
I don't think they are yet, but I bet they will be in a few years. Considering they run 77% of UKs market right now.
