Jordan seems like one of the better middle eastern places to be if you're a woman. There are a lot worse. And if you're honest, you'll agree.

The subjugation of women in Iraq wasn't an issue. The women in Iraq were probably no more likely to be abducted and tortured by Saddam's regime than men, in fact they were probably less likely to have that happen to them.
Saddam's philosophy of domination over his society didn't really favor one gender over the other as much as other ME states. Why have only one half of the population live in fear when you can have them all living in fear?

I'm sure there is more than one reason that CEDAW has not been ratified by the US, but it is not because we want our women to stay under veils, to not vote, to not get educated and work and to be the indentured slave of our men.

If you think American women aren't liberated you've obviously never met one. Trust me, Sharia law would make things a hell of a lot easier for us American men.

that was in reply to your article in which they said women need a written permission to travel abroad, since you know how it seems in Jordan? how were you able to quote such propaganda about Jordan? do you usually read what you copy and paste?

I hope now you realize that you were posting propaganda.

you do not have to act defensive.

we can argue a lot about women in U.S. but this is not our topic right now, just as a note, they are less happy now than in 60's, maybe you should ask them, what do they want?

    Liberated and Unhappy

so.. Iraqi women got equal rights cos of the fear from Saddam? is this what you are trying to say? let's see now after the fear of Saddam was gone... their rights were gone too, should they be thankful to U.S. now cos "they saved their butts"

source: IRAQ: Saddam Better for Women

    speaking about fear:

these are Iraqi women now, after liberation according to HRW.

I take your word for it. Because if anyone would know propaganda when they saw it, it would be you.

Please explain to me the rights that women enjoy in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan and Iran. Are the women who are/were stoned to death in Iran for adultery being treated equally or fairly?
What about the women that the Taliban beat for not covering up or for trying to secretly teach girls to read? Or the ones that get their fingers chopped off for wearing nail polish?
What about the women of Saudi Arabia who are institutionally regarded as second class citizens and are basically treated as indentured slaves without equal rights, is that all propaganda? Am I misinformed?

What point are you trying to make? That they would be happier under Sharia law? Why would you even post this if not to make the point that a less liberated woman is a better woman?

I have no doubt that women had it better under Saddam. The religious wackos couldn't have their way under Saddam because they would be competing with his power. So under Saddam women were treated better than in most ME/Islamic-predominant countries relative to men.
The treatment of women isn't the reason Iraq was invaded. Like I said before, that was more to do with him invading two of his neighbors within about a ten year time frame, throwing the international community into a war with him, then refusing to uphold his obligations after surrender to let inspectors fully do their job.

You're proving my point about women under Islam. Iraq in many ways was more secular. The clerics couldn't enforce edicts at the local level under Saddam. There was one supreme ruler in Iraq and the consequences of defiance were too harsh to attempt. And because of that, women had it better. But the trade off was that the entire country was not free, everything was dictated by Saddam.

Now at least Iraqis will be in control of their own destiny. I hope that doesn't mean that the religious fanatics take control and they fall back into the 7th century and start stoning women for cheating on their husband without any real standard of proof.

We can only hope that the adherence to backwards rules and practices will cease after the new democratic way has settled in for the Iraqi people.

Thanks for taking my word about the propaganda you posted, but this was not the goal, I refuted it, and showed you the way, hoping that you stop taking anybody's word and copy and paste without checking yourself, so if there is anything you should learn from that, it would be, do not take anybody's word, you will be ok on your own after that ;)

Saudi women for sure are not having it according to Shari'a laws, neither in Pakistan, or Afghanistan, whether under Taliban or now, nor in Iran, for example, if it was true that women where teaching their girls in secret because Taliban was not allowing them to go to school, then this is a clear violation to Shari'a laws, and can't see why you use it to say Shari'a laws are bad.

you mix in your argument traditions and Shari'a laws, and this is not a good argument, Iraq and Saudi had almost same traditions in the past, yet women in Iraq got much more rights than any other women in other Arabian country, why?

somebody may say, because Saudi are using Shari'a laws, here then comes the mistake, do you know Shari'a laws? if you really know them, you will find that Saudi do not follow Shari'a laws, especially in regards to women, despite it is not a secular state, while in Iraq, they were more in accordance with Shari'a laws than in Saudi despite it was secular.

by saying Iraqis are now in control of their own destiny, I sense a big need for you to repeat the typical American saying of "we saved your butt", they would appreciate it if that was true, but seeing the numbers of Iraqi refugees and immigrants around the world, it is clear that they have no control of their destiny in Iraq now, under Saddam it was allowed for them to travel abroad and immigrate, and some did during the long years of siege, but they in no way reached even a small part of the numbers that left after Iraq been liberated.

I think this is why you guys are always fighting each other. You can't agree on interpretation of how best to abuse women.

I got it imad. Dictatorships are better because it keeps the religious nutjobs in their place. And a liberated woman is a bad woman.

Vietnam comes to mind as well.

In all fairness, Lafayette did help us quite a bit during the American Revolution. Of course we helped France in order to keep them and Europe FREE. Lafayette and France helped us because they hated England.

I'm being satirical of course. In reality, Americans have never forgotten Lafayette. Sadly, the French have forgotten America. (in some circles)

The US fought the French in WW2 in Vichy controlled North Africa. The US Army lost 526 killed, 837 wounded, and 41 missing.

A couple 'honour killings' have hit the news over here in the UK and it is just the saddest state of affairs. It seems to be down to members of the family to actually get together to kill a young girl, ie the father, uncle, brother etc of the victim, purely because she may have fallen in love with 'the wrong guy'!!

Not exactly the most intelligent group of people.. But we should really be tolerant of their right to kill their own. Hell, we made it a law in the US to do that on a regular basis. We just call it Abortion, rather than Mercy Killing.
