Duplicate content penalty question

Is there any possibility to get Google's duplicate content penalty if I chop my site's long articles (pages) to smaller ones. 1 long page -> 3 short pages. I mean, if Google does index 3 new pages but still leaves the original long page on its index...

    maybe i'm crazy

The so-called 'duplicate penalty' is mostly an urban myth.
if you're copying someone else's entire site - then you need to worry about a penalty.
The reasons to be careful about duplicate content are
    a) google doesn't want to show a searcher page after page of identical listings, so if your content is the same as a lot of other sites, it just won't show up in serps - this doesn't mean your entire site has a penalty - it's a filter, not a penalty
    b) if you have exactly the same content in different parts of your site with different page urls you're giving yourself unnecessary canonical issues, again, because some pages may get filtered out, and you may also find that you're diluting your backlink juice to key pages, if different sites are linking to differnt pages of the same content

Excellent pointer by magda and agree completely that the duplicate content does not help you get good ranks in serps simply for the fact of getting filtered and not being penalized.

Either way, duplicate content does not help you any which way...except may be just filling up your site/blog!

i think google will not penalized you from doing that as long as the quality of content is there..

You wouldn't escape duplicate content penalty this way.

It is not a good thing to do. Google don't like it when you repeat the same content all over your site.
