instead of focusing on how many backlinks you dropped, focus on how many you can build. there wil be time when you will lose some backlinks due to various reasons. but if you keep building links, you won't have to worry about that

websites going down, people removing posts, content management, domain change.... the question you are asking is one which involves a huge amount of factors, (i'm pretty sure) you're not going to get a solid answer.

I think I experienced the same thing before. Explainstuff had about 18 or 20 backlinks before the day this of the latest PR update. The next day my backlinks dropped to 5 and now they are at 8. I have no clue as to why my backlinks were decreased from 18 to 5. My backlinks in the google.com/webmasters didn't decrease though. Just the link:www.explainstuff.com gives less results, which is quite surprising.

If you are using the link: operator at Google or the Google WMT to determine backlinks then you should be aware that BOTH are only a sample of your links. Neither one shows you all the links that Google counts. Both can show you links that Google does NOT count (like nofollow links or links from URLs under a penalty). There is absolutely no way for you to accurately determine an exhaustive list of links Google sees and/or counts. So forget about trying to do so.

Yahoo! Site Explorer's link: operator will typically show a MUCH more exhaustive list of inbound links but only those links that Yahoo! knows about. Since Yahoo! and Google have different URLs indexed, you can't use it to determine exactly which links Google knows about. But it's likely closer to an exhaustive list than Google's LINK: operator and WMT.

Either way, as SultanofSEO said... focus on building links instead of counting them... Look forward, not back. Links come and go for various reasons like those stated by ibrg... as well as pages getting deindexed. If the page that links to you is not indexed then the link will no longer count.

that is a normal scenario in seo maybe a moderator of a blog or forum deleted your post that's why it happens instead of wasting your time looking for a reason why it happens use that time in creating a quality and related back links to strengthen your site.

It happens all the time and quite frequently with press releases too as they will expire after 30 days.

One of the most misunderstood issues about duplicate content might be part of your problem here.

Google looks at all your backlinks and, of course, counts them towards your pagerank--at first. If any of them are dup content, eventually, Google will determine which ONE has the most weight and eliminates the rest of them.

Dup Content is really more like a competition filter.

Even using Yahoo site Explorer, we have noticed a big decrease in listed backlinks to our sites from sites like mixx, oyax, etc.
Are these being generally devalued? Anyone else seeing this?

My guess is that they have fewer pages indexed than they used to... Therefore, the links are no longer counted. For an inbound link to count, the source page containing the link must be indexed.
