this is a real eye opener for me. from now on no more time wasting trying to get listed in this directory. in that amount of time i could have submitted to hundred other directories.
jacksmith I still think it is beneficial to get listed in DMOZ, due to the influence the listings have in Google. The secondary benefit is that DMOZ-clones (those that download the database and use it on their site) effectively create another link for you. Over time this has created literally thousands of additional links to my site from people that have used the DMOZ database. The problem with submitting to those "hundred other directories" is that they wont send you much traffic either.
One of my inside pages is listed on DMOZ, and I receive maybe 2 a month from DMOZ even though that page is a popular page in a niche market. I think the importance of being listed in DMOZ is it contributes to your PageRank value with Google.
Except those "thousands of additional links" to your site will not help you one bit. Between duplicate content filters wiping out PR and backlinks value, and the virtually zero advertising value from DMOZ clones, you might just as well have those "thousands of additional links" from a FFA link farm.
True, those links aren't exactly exceptional, I probably overstated there. Though they are a lot of links nonetheless. It should be noted that one of the clones is the Google Directory so not all clones are completely useless Im sure there are a few others. I did find cloning on http://www.knowledge.com, which is a PR6 on the index page. Not too sure how beneficial the deeper linking from the site would be though, probably not worth much. Which I guess is the point. The links spawn from absolutely no work.
Ads I've placed on my DMOZ clone which show up on every page of the site http://dmoz.icarusindie.com:2004/stats.php?user=kalvinb602@hotmail.com Access Log summary for July http://logs.icarusindie.com:2004/dmoz/usage_200607.html It's not that hard to set up a clone that isn't exactly the same as the original.
I know of a site that is pr3 only with a link from dmoz and a loot of links form the dmoz clones. The dmoz page is pr5 with 49 external links. On a Dmoz listing you normaly get 0 traffic
