    Hi DP members,

    I have a question related to H1, H2 and H3 tags.

I am optimizing my website and most of my articles have a paragraphs with same importance so I am using H1 tag for main title and H2 for 2-3 sections which have same importance for the article.

Is that wrong and do you think this affect my SEO? I am not a 100% sure, but I think the structure will look wrong for readers if they see diffent sizes of my titles and may ignore important part of the text.

    Kind regard
    Kal

h1 should only be used once on a page for the main heading whereas h2 for the sub-headings or sub-topics

<h1> should be the page header... I would strongly suggest every page have one and only one <h1> that targets the primary keyword phrase from the <title> (the keyword or phrase you most want the page to rank for).

Multiple <h2>s should be used on the page if possible to reinforce the <h1> and <title>. I usually try to have several <h2>s on the page that target the primary keyword phrases (and/or slight variations) from the <title> as well as targeting the secondary and tertiary keyword phrases from the <title> (if applicable).

Thank you for this. I didn't know that my h2 tags should target primary keywords. Again, thank you!

Google recommends the use of the <Hx> tags but does not limit the quantity or order of use. I have seen 8 <h1> tags used without an issue. But we beat the page in the SERPs with using only 1.

We have benchmarked the use of the <h1> tag, same exact page. One test with an <h1> tag and the other without the tag (HTML deleted). There was no change in the ranking.

For the beginner to SEO, I have followed Google's recommendations (www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf) and have very high rankings as a result.
