Netbooks are cheaper, smaller ( 8" - 12" screen ) usually running Intel Atom processor and no CD/DVD drives.

While I do have a high end desktop for gaming and video editing, most of my work is done from a netbook (hp mini 1000). I just switched from notebook to netbook though - I've always been tempted by them, and since most of my work is writing when my current laptop hinge broke I needed a quick and cheap replacement.

I just recently brought a laptop and then realized that it is too bulky to carry around, regretting not buying netbook. Although it would be painful for you to work on netbooks for long, not recommended.

I use a laptop. I love the idea of a netbook, but I think I would get frustrated by the screen size.

I've got all 4 (I'll include PDAs and I'm buying a netbook for travelling), but nothing beats a good old desktop, unless, of course, you're on the move...

Desktop is great for IM business and gaming because it still has more space, room for better specs and overall more reliable and stable than a laptop or notebook. The only real advantage a laptop has is mobility so yeah.. only if you need it i guess.
