What is the best alternative to KEI?

SEO is not one of my best skills but I'm trying my best to learn. This afternoon, I had the opportunity to learn about Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI). The speaker basically taught us how to compute for it to determine the best keywords to target.

I just came back from the talk and researched a bit about KEI on my own. Surprisingly a lot of online experts don't seem to recommend it much. I do realize that the speaker may not have had enough time to discuss other techniques but I was wondering if KEI is absolutely irrelevant now. Does it have no value or use at all?

If it is indeed not so useful, what are the best alternatives to it?

KEI is the best way to measure the keyword effectiveness of your targeted keywords that's why I don't see why you're looking for an alternative.

I disagree....KEI doesn't tell you much at all. It doesn't matter how many total competitors you have. It matters how strong your top 10 competitors are. I find it is best to use a tool like SEO Elite to analyze the backlinks of each top ranked site.

I'm looking for an alternative because I researched about KEI online and a couple of experts wrote about KEI not being a good true measure of keyword effectiveness. I'm a newbie so I don't know whether it is or is not.
