I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but...getting listed at the top of google is not as difficult as made out to be. The Google sandbox isn't applicable from my recent experience. I.E. I have a brand new site. Meaning newly registered and launched on 05/12/2009, built on wordpress, uploaded approximately 5 articles and promoted. Am currently listed #3 for a three word phrase with 5,390,000 search results. And... have had 114 unique / 178 hits in the first 11 days of the site being live. No prelauched tactics or anything. Did some niche research, found a market, and went from there all in the same day. Have a great day

target two, three and four word key phrases, single word require sooo much work with backlinks and lots of time. Building that many backlinks in too short of time will get you flagged for spam. There is less competition with three and four word phrases, therefore easier to rank higher and faster. Long tail phrases are the money phrases or buying terms anyways. learn everything, I mean everything about on page SEO

Well...I see that we first need to define SEO. My definition is where you employ certain strategies when building your page I.E. Title, descriptions, header tags, link text, keyword placement and density, etc. Where as link building is more promotion. Others consider link building as part of SEO because it has such an affect on your rankings. Once your site is optimized, you dont' need to touch it again unless you change something. Link building in getting links to point to your site, this does not involve editing your site in anyway(aside from the party linking to you requiring a reciprocal link back), If you don't need to edit your page in order to get back links, I don't consider this SEO, I view it as promoting. Now, in terms of SEO per the previous definition, while you build your site, before it's even live is when you do SEO. Once the site is live, the rest is updating or promotion based efforts. So doing SEO immediately should no be viewed as spam unless you are keyword stuffing etc. Building links to you site too fast can get you flagged for spam if you're not careful.
