1)Write unique content. Plan yourself before writing the article. Always try to maintain good keyword frequency for the Master keyword(For which you are going to optimize). 2)Make sure, you submit that article to top 3 bookmarking sites. 3)Make sure your internal linkbuilding is strong enough. Add useful, fresh and informative content in your blog. Update your blog regularly. Also, try to get some relevant backlinks. All this will help your site to rank good in SERPs, thus your organic traffic will increase.
What is the niche of your blog? If it's a personal blog, you can give up. Otherwise you can write some quality posts and submit to social bookmarksl sites like digg and delicious, The targetted traffic will follow from these sites and search engines then.
You need to focus more time on building high quality backlinks to your website if it is in a competitive niche as search engine like Google will usually put higher priority if you have a lot of backlinks to your website.

either use a major kwd. and get lots of backlinks or post regularly like 7 or 8 times a day and get tons of traffic from long tail keywords . i do both these techniques.
When you comment on other blogs: make sure that you find a way to integrate your keyword(your blog title will do) in the name box,as well bringing keywords in the body of comment. Also don't just go about leaving your commenting and leaving your link in virtually any blog out there. No! Doing that carelessly may injure your PR, rather make sure that you comment on blogs that have a higher page rank in blogsearch.google.com and a higher authority posts in technorati.com
Ebonyking, I don't really think that when you leave blog comments on a lot of blogs out there, it will hurt your PR. As long as you're not mass-posting comments using some kind of software it should be fine.
1. Comment on do follow blogs in a similar niche to your own. 2. Article submission 3. exchange links with sites with a simlar theme to your own. You need to be doing this daily for it to be having any effect. My suggestion would be to structure your time each day to post artilces on your own blog, do each of these activities and bolster this with paid advertising through Google adwords if necessary.
