Serps and Pagerank. Check out this long, painful article. If you look in the middle, you will see the anchor text "used cars" pointing to a used car dealer in Florida: http://www2.bc.edu/~richarad/lcb/rev/mt.html

Now check that sites pagerank. Serps you ask? Check this out:
    http://www.semrush.com/info/www.usedcarwestpalmbeach.net?ref=174537735

Other than that one juicy link, they have a few weak ones, but nothing special.

How much do you think that link cost? Some Boston College Student getting beer money.

Thanks for the Semrush Url. :)

Its an obvious proof backlinks from .edu sites really help in getting on top

I did a blog post about this about six months ago and Boston College was quick to contact me. They said those pages are little mini websites they give to the students and according to their weblogs that page hadn't been edited in a while so there is no question they're reaping the benefits for some time.

We all try to stay white hat but when you see abuse go unpunished it's frustrating.

Everybody knows that high PR .edu or .gov link is worth more than 1000 weak ones

What abuse you are talking about ? You say that getting a link from an edu site and hiding it with css is abuse ?

If that is blackhat, then there is no whitehat, and there is no SEO at all ;)

It's great ti have some proofs after all, since many people are talking about the EDU links effectiveness and many others do not believe such theories.

it's a PR5 page with only 2 links on the whole page so it will pass quite a lot of value.
The same would be true even if it was not an .edu page.

But matt cutts, an engineer in google and head of web spam division openly stated that google DOES NOT value .edu or .org links more than .com or .net. He said it all realtes to the theme matching of your site and the site you get link from

Matt Cutts has become Google's Spokesman in the past couple of years, but remember he will only tell you what they (Google) want him to tell you. He's a puppet. I always listen to him but i don't believe 10% of what he says

I second that, nothing shady about adding a link with certain style.

Agreed. Consider the Alternative - He actually admits that EDU domains pass (on average) higher Pagerank, and thus the word spreads out and EDU's across the world get SPAMMED...

The fact is (& he mentions this), that mostly, EDU sites have higher Pagerank and less linkage then commercial sites, thus they are a great way to get backlinks. Personally, i wouldn't post a link on a edu site unless it was very relevant to the discussion or discourse. Thats a personal matter of ethics more so then anything else.

    Each to their own.

Sure he only tells what is considered legitimate to tell - there's no other way. He's just not telling the whole truths, that's all.

Sure that wouldn't be acceptable, otherwise what is the purpose of edu sites? Right, education, not promotion.

I agree. This example only shows that a link from a PR5 page with only 2 links is valuable. It really says nothing specific about a link from a .edu page being any more valuable than a link from any similar page from another TLD.

I found it doing research. They are nowhere near my area, but I saw them pop up every now and then.
I simply looked at my SEO Quake and saw it only had a few backlinks and a decent pr so I checked it out.

I couldn't even read the article after about 10 seconds. Talk about 10 dollar words! No wonder nobody found it

Good luck for anybody getting ranked for that term. It's the longer tailed keywords with "Florida" they come up for, like "used cars florida", they're like number seven.
One thing I learned last year, that isn't a good one to show up for because Florida is a big state. It's best to target a town or county (or region), unless of course you have an Adsense Site
