Does the number of pages a website has matter to SE's?

I have sites that I am working on but they only have 5-10 pages of strong content. I wasn't planning on making them any larger... but will that hurt me when trying to get listed in the top of the se?

I believe the more original, quality content you have on your site the better you perform as you're able to really drill down and target specific keywords and phrases on those pages - something which you are not able to do with a site that is limited to just a handful of pages.

More quality and original pages under you main pages can only help and long as it is easy to navigate. The number of pages indexed is generally a good quality measure.

I only ask because you can buy these sites that have 100's of pages... but that seems like cheating. It will take me a long time to build up pages... is that how everyone does it? I don't mind taking the time becasue I love the site :) but I am just wondering if people actually make the pages themselves or are just buying pages and reconfiguring the same info.

It will effect for sure, take this example :
a website with 3 pages about adsense > Seo Result > you will get visitors searching or adsense .

a website with 100000 pages about all the online marketing stuff > Seo Result > you will get tons of visitors searching for the stuff in your site .

But make sure to be original so you will avoid the copied content filters ...

    Yeah, bad idea...

The easiest way to get lots of pages with original content is to blog. Each time you create a post, you get a new page ;)

The more pages you have, the more indexed content you found in the search engine database. If each page is optimized probably, you will have a greater chance achieving high SERP with respective keywords.

No matter how strong your content is, it is to your disadvantage by not expanding and renewing your content... Search Engines like to index fresh content. Your page's information will slowly fade away on the SERP if your competitors are able to provide newer information.

    Melissa...

Here is my honest opinion - if you want to make this a good website.

At the moment, it's a mess in terms of formatting - text sizes, spacing of paragraphs, etc. I think you should fix those issues, then from there proceed to optimize the site; Coming up with a plan and goals is the first step.

If you need help just ask here in the forum. If you want to hire a consultant, contact myself or any fine SEO practioners here.

So the answer is... page number does or doesnt matter when it comes to getting high up in the se?
I'm not sure I got an answer...
what if the keyword phrases I am going for have no good sites at the top of the search?

I mean the top site for one of my keyword phrases has and error message! None of the sites in to top 5-10 even remotly have anything to do wiith the search tem... which is one of the reasons I chose it. Who would click on that an error message link?? Is it going to be hard for me to get above these sites with my site still small? I understand what you are all saying... that I should build up my site daily until it is larger and better rounded... which I will. But for keyword phrases that don't have much competition... does my low page count factor in when google eventually gets to my site?

Number of pages is not a factor in SERP. Search Engine index your site by pages. Your page will rank higher than the current top 10 if it:

    1. is considered much more relevant for that keyword search (On page SEO)
    2. is more popular than the current top dogs (High PageRank, Off page SEO)

Number of pages doesn't matter in order to place high on the search engines. Each website page is weighted separately by the search engines.

Generally, number of pages does matter in order to make money from ads on your website. The more pages you have, the more your chances of having more visitors, and therefore, the more your chances of having visitors click on ads.

    Hope this helps.
