Hi, I have two questions here. -1. How many competitors in your niche and for your keywords do you have before your SEO work? -2. Then how many competitors in your niche when you ranked into the first page of SE, like Google? I need some answers to help me do the decision on SEO becasue I have too many competitors (more than 90,000,000) now in my niche for my keywords. Best Regards, Lori
How broad are your keywords? What is the average search volume for the keywords you have chosen? To answer your question though: - I have a lot of competitors for my niche (funny pictures) but I narrowed my keyword to just what I specialize in(around 1k search volume) and got to page one(I bounce from 3-5th spot) and now I am opening up to trying to get ranked for better keywords. I had to start somewhere though. I don't know if that answered your question(s) or not. If you are new to the niche you may want to narrow down your keywords so you have a better chance of getting ranked and once you get larger try and expand your keywords from there.
number of competitors will like to increase by the time you hit the front page. how many competitors are there for a given keyword depends on the keyword itself. different niche has different amount of competitors
90,000,000 results means absolutely nothing! You will find your real competitors by checking out other factors. intitle:"your keyword here", inurl:"your keyword here", etc. give you a much better idea about how competitive a keyword is
In general, the number of competitors are the number of sites ranking better than you for your targeted keyword plus maybe the 10 that rank just below you. Who cares about the guy who's not even trying to rank for the keyword phrase who happens to be at position 80,932,173 (unless you are at position 80,932,174)?
As others have said, it does not matter how many results there are for your keyword. It is how strong the top 10 websites are. Unless it is a very high traffic keyword, you won't get much traffic unless you are on the first page. So think about what your goal ranking is (should be top3-5) and analyze how strong the websites near those rankings are. Analyze the backlinks of those websites using Yahoo Site Explorer or even better, a paid tool like SEO Elite. Decide if you can put the effort into building a better link profile than those sites. If it does look like too much effort, perhaps try targeting a less competitive keyword to start.
Thats a quite big number of competitors... but dont lose hope, you must put also into consideration the search query per month of your keyword. If its have high volume of search query, I think its just fair number. Try to rank on it. Who knows?
It erally depends a lot on the specific niche and the competitiveness (not necessarily judged by search results) of that particular keyword. Just take a look at the first page google pages.
Only the top 20 competitors count. If you are not in the top 20 SERPs, then your SEO will not count and your page will not receive clicks. But when you are targeting 90,000,000, even the SEO Pros will have a hard time. With proper on-page seo, you should be able to rank very well when the number is under 1,500,000. If you get ~250 links with proper SEOed anchor text, that number is 3,200,000. And this is for your home page only. For internal pages, divide by 10. If the number is above 5,000,000, you will need a SEO Pro.
