How do you build backlinks? Do you use a company?

Back links are links where your site is located. For example, my signature has my blog. DP provides a back link to my blog. Use your site in forum signatures with good anchor text and that is really the best way to get back links - be active in forums!

 

Link building has to be the most tedious job in the world.
For quality links from relevant sites you can email webmasters to ask them to include your site. But here you have a catch 22. If your site has a low PR no one wants to link to you. So you have to try and get your PR up with a zillion lesser links. I'm not sure how much relevancy links from forums hold. I have heard from many that they do not matter that much.

The best way is to develop some sort of link bait. This being either articles, blog entries, some sort of tool or some such thing people will link to you for.

 

You can submit articles to article directories and other website owners will publish it on their website if they find it interesting.

You can also try to do Squidoo lens and submit the lens to 20 - 30 social bookmark sites.

 

I basically use dofollow blog comment, forum posting and link exchange to build link

I work with people who research the best possible backlinks (highest PR, etc)... they give me a list, and then I hire people to submit them for me.

 

I'd rather build little log homes out of a "Lincoln Logs" toy set than links.

heh heh well, I didn't mean it like that. I and anybody, can easily build hundreds of high-ranking backlinks in a matter of days, or weeks simply by looking at other webmaster's "cool links" page, and then contacting those sites to exchange links with. Like, this one: http://www.davesdaily.com/coollinks.htm

I know you disagree, but what I meant was that no matter what a webmaster does, it does not mean he will land on page one, two, or, three, even. It is not guaranteed. And even if he is lucky enough to land high, when selling a product, organic traffic is not all that anyway.
