Should i give backlink to directory

Sometimes when i am submitting a site to a web directory, they say linking back to us is not required, but if u give you will have higher priority in listing. Do directories provide traffic to us if we give backlink to them. What should I do?

In my experience, backlinking to directories gives you a higher ranking in the directory itself. I almost never link back to a directory though.

I wonder if directories are worth the effort in the first place. If you get listed in 80% without a backlink, I wonder if the remaining 20% are worth the extra link. So far, I haven't got much traffic nor rankings via directory listings.

This is an everlasting discussion. I still think directory submission is worthwhile. Especially directories such as DMOZ are very useful. If DMOZ accepts you, Google will give your site some credit.

Reciprocal links are a waste of time

In most cases a reciprocal link doesn't necessarily mean better placement but rather a shorter review time. There are plenty of free, non-reciprocal directories you can submit to. I personally stay away from any that require a reciprocal link.

And yes, they really do help a lot.

It won't bring in traffic, and search engines couldn't care less. Complete waste of time/advertising space.

The only directories that I would give a link back to is a niche directory. For the other directories I'd focus on finding free directories or ones that charge a small fee and are respected.

Would you please support your statement with some empirical evidence?

Problem is that with Great Power comes Great Corruption. Over the years as DMOZ become the "ultimate" directory, their quality of links (and your chances of getting listed as a legit site) have become worse and worse.

I would stay away from the reciprocal link back directories as we;ll. Since it is very hard to keep track with a sites visibility and whether or not your getting any juice supplied by that link. I usually let my submitters know that I will blast their links to over 2600 fans of ours to give them more exposure as well

The only directories that I backlinked to were the PR 5+ directories anything under that I really didn't care if I was high in there listings or not.

Why to give backlink to a directory when there are tonnes of directories which accepts your site for free.

To get some links profit - don't do Link farming.
