i Might of noticed a trend., as soon as i added a channel to my adsense for DP banner sharing, i noticed more than 75% drop in revenue in my account so im thinking if smartpricing is done per channel or per adsense acount. IF its done per account, then DP sharing is the reason im losing money
It should (for fairness) be on a per site basis... although based on tests people have done it's generally accepted that smartpricing affects the entire account.
Whilst I had some other theory on this, Jensense has stated quite clearly that it's calculated on an account basis, weekly (unless I totally missed something).
Art you are right, it is done on a weekly basis, is per account, and does not run on impressions to clicks, it works on clicks to conversions.
OWG: Any idea if people are manipulating the conversion code in order to get cheaper content clicks? Or is this offset by less ads showing on the advertiser that's converting poorly? (In which case, advertisers will get punished for poorly converting, which doesn't seem too good either).
I already removed mine, and the return on my AdSense clicks is soaring! I'm just kidding, but I hope that it is soon to be.
I really find it interesting and disturbing that Google would base smart pricing on an account by account basis and not a site, channel or better yet webpage basis. It would seem that smart pricing on a more detailed basis would earn both websites and Google more money.
I've already brought this up a number of times, and it seems like a really stupid oversight on Google's behalf (and strangely against their efficiency), but Jensense and a number of others firmly state that it's on an account basis and recalculated weekly. I find it self defeating, if I have 500 sites in my account, and one crappy advertiser decides to convert poorly (or manipulates the conversion script, or is generally terrible at marketing), it's punishing all my other sites? It needs to be done on a keyword basis, damnit. Google should inherently need to protect their bottom line (and their endless lust for relevancy, which is fair enough), which is why I'm so surprised they're doing this anyways.
i totally agree, i cant imagine why google analyst would make that decision to do it per account, the only logical reason they would want to is so they can save money since the chances of each account being smartpriced because of one site is very high
was the idea of the account thing, from Jensense.com? While her stuff is good, that "leak" info about smart pricing could be fake...or not. I haven't visited her site in a while which is still a great site by the way. I think google would be smarter than that, to have it affect an entire account. I been experimenting with smart pricing for for over 4 months now. Nothing's really changed, and I haven't determined much either...besides have a load of data for channels and stuff like that. Did anyone read the post at webmasterworld about removing channel tracking might affect smart pricing? I just did that the other night and my ecpm has increased about 40% while my CTR has dropped 20%. http://www.webmasterworld.com/google_adsense/3011824.htm
Its a really stupid oversight. I wouldn't be so worried about one crappy advertiser, I would be more worried that one of my sites were dragging the rest down. Really I think the best way for Google to track this would be on a channel by channel basis. On accounts like mine where I use channels very systematically, they could really tune their smart pricing to maximize ad revenues for themselves and me. I don't know about doing it on a keyword basis this might be serious overkill and create a massive amount of processing overhead. At some level of granularity, the processing costs out weigh the benefits.
