Can anyone fill me in on how google page rank is calculated, and how it's possible there are tools to tell you this. Wouldn't google keep that a secret?

Yes, it would. Many things (indefinite number in fact) count, including the prs of the pages linking to the page, the domain age et cetera.

Thanks for clearing that up, thought that it was rather strange that so many people just happened to know how to calculate that.

Basically, you need to get lot of backlinks in order to increase PR. Backlinks from pages that themselves have high PR, such backlinks worth more and pass more PR juice. But the actual PR calculating algo is not public and only Google knows about it.

PR can still be given even if you have no backlinks.

This is true. My site is 0 PR and ranks on the 1st to 3rd pages on Google searches. In fact I list #1 on the first page for particular keywords.

In my opinion your PR is not what it can do for you but what it can do for others. For example, you can give your PR to others in the form of back links.

A basic formula to determine link value is: PAGE RANK OF THE PAGE GIVING THE LINK / TOTAL OUTBOUND LINKS X .85. Lets assume a page with a PR3 that has 10 outbound links gives a link to your page. 3/10 = .3 X .85 = .255 link value to your page.

So we can see that a site with a PR1 with 2 outbound links is more valuable than a site with a PR6 and 300 outbound links.

This is just basic and by far more complex but gives the general idea of what is happening in regards to back links.

You need back links with numerical value to determine your own PR. The more numerical value back links, the chances of a higher PR are greater. Other things taken into consideration by Google's algo are relevancy, traffic, and other complex unknown factors.

Back links from PR0 also have value in a more intrinsic way. PR0 sites that are relevant and have keyword rich anchor text linking to your page can help Google better position your page in the search engines by understanding what your page content is about. It is likely that links from PR0 sites are also factored into the calculations determining your sites PR as described in the paragraph above.

To recap in a nutshell PR is irrelevant for your site's position in the search engines. High quality, relevant back links determine your site's position in the search engines. However, these high quality, relevant back links will determine your sites page rank.

PR is something you give like money, back links are something you receive like goods and services. The more you receive, the more popular you are. The more popular you, are the higher you are positioned in the search engines and the more PR that you can give to others.

    Hope that makes sense.

You can also refer to this site which you give you some rough explanation on how PR concept works. Of course in actual situation it may not be 100% accurate as I think google has since changed their algo.

very very complex mathematical calculations - what we need to do is get more quality backlinks from trusted and autoritative sites to get more link juice or is it juice link lol, and hence higher pr

Honestly, after a few years of observation, I finally discovered that the total of backlinks is not proportionally related with the Page Rank! Let's say, a site that have less than 20 backlinks can still have PR4, while those other sites that have over thousands of backlinks might just got PR1/2...
