    I am neither. I think you should have more choices up there. I would describe myself as agnostic. I do actually believe in "something" - I just don't claim to know what that something is. I don't claim to think that you can prove the existence of God (I don't think you can.) And for the most part I think most people's perception of what God is (the man in the sky thing) is ridiculous. If there is a God, it's nothing like the one in the Christian Bible (or any other religious text.) I'm more along the lines of "God" is actually existence itself. I think the myths of religion are a blockage between people and true understanding. And that is true both as it relates to the reality all around us and the spirituality that is the "something else" that we cannot understand (if it exists in the first place...)

    I guess my main problem with this question is the "black & white" nature of it. It's similar to asking someone if they are a capitalist or a communist. As if there's no in-between. Of course there's a massive distance between and that's where most people find themselves.

    An Atheist is also a believer.

    He believes that no god exists.

    I am a believer.

    You either have a belief in god, or you lack it. if you lack it, you are atheist.
    a = without
    theism = belief in god

    Clever. So now you are saying there is no room for the word Agnostic in your language? You don't believe in God, you don't believe in Agnostics, how masturbation? Perhaps you definition allows for sex with a partner or abstinence.... there is no such thing as masturbation. Its amazing how much knowledge you can avoid if you just remove certain words from the dictionary.

    There are agnostics, but agnostics are atheists. Agnostics are a subset of atheists.

    Sigh. I believe he has. He's right. The word "atheist" literally means, without a belief in deity. The definitions included in American dictionary usage are very narrow - mostly, following everyday usage (with a linguistic debate in dictionary construction over "prescriptive" v. "normal usage" continuing to this day). As mentioned on "Religious Tolerance."

    From the Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy (helpful, as Stox is a Brit, and, well, English is his language):

    I don't have to, i agree that agnostic means what you think it means (or something similar) and i agree that they exist. The point i am making it that agnostics are, by definition, atheists because they lack a belief in a god.

    What you are saying is the equivalent of arguing that a poodle isn't a dog on the grounds that it's a "poodle". A poodle is a subset of "dog", just like agnostic is a subset of "atheist".

    You are an atheist, whether you like it or not.
