I opened a basketball forum May 2nd and I just want to get it higher ranked in search results or do anything I can to help get more traffic.

    Here is my forum:
    http://btabasketball.com/forums/

I thought that this would be the best section for it so sorry if it isn't. Any help is greatly appreciated.

find some related forums and rpomote your site there using forum signature
also do some keyword research and find a few moderately competitive terms and use them for link building. analyze your competiton to see from where they are getting backlinks form and how many backlinks they have. once you have all the intelligence, you can put together a link building plan and act accordingly

    1. Participate in other basketball forums
    2. if you already have subscribers, run a contest to refer their friends to join your forum
    3. Guest post on basketball related blogs.

I would do that, but I would probably get banned for "spamming" by having the link in my signature area.

Nobody is asking you to spam. IF the forum allows link in signature, you should participate in the forum normally as a basketball enthusiast and people will notice your forum in signature.

Just to give you some stats, I get more than 20 visitors per day for my 'free directory list' signature from this forum.

If you want to achieve higher ranking in SERPs you should select few effective keywords and optimize them aiming to specific audience.

You should do the normal SEO techniques for any website. I may take time for people to know about your forum. Just keep on marketing it.

Offer something new in your forum to generate interest for basketball enthusiasts. Post fresh contents. Make relevant keywords. Update regularly. Promote through social media or forum signatures (be sure to post regularly).

how can you define effective keyword? as far as i know, ranking still comes with the process on how you optimize your site.. keywords research is used to over view the potential conversion of the site..

    Hello there!

SEO is very important, but I suggest you to use Organic SEO (it means to use 1-2 keywords per page and stop). After the first important optimization you can use these things:

    1) TubeMogul.com - get free links for blasting videos on YouTube, Google, Yahoo, StupidVideos, etc.

    2) Post on related forums with high PR

    3) Make good comments (no spam) on high PR blogs

    4) Create Squidoo lens

    5) Create hub on HubPages

    Hope it helps.
