My partner and I were doing an excellent work putting our website on the first page of Google and other main SE with our anchor keywords. But since 2 weeks ago our rankings have been going up and down with huge differences. One day we're on the first page, and the next one we're not even ranked. We used to do blog submitting with relatively good results, but lately we left doing it as often as before, could this be a problem? Last thing we did was changing our meta tags, could that be the reason? My partner suggests that SE may be penalizing us for something, could this be possible? I think that they would warn us first. I hope you can provide us with some ideas to find out what's going on with our techniques. If you need more info, let me know. Thanks for reading this thread, have a nice Sunday.
How old is the website? New young website tend the fluntate quiet a bit. Also google seems to give a temporary bonus for new content.
There is nothing as constant as change. What you MUST do is be consistent in your marketing campaigns. The search engines are going to do whatever they want. Stability comes with a well known brand.
For new sites the ranking will be very unstable. Google tends to rank newer websites high in the search results for a couple of weeks then it drops off considerably. If you keep up good SEO techniques in the long run you will do fine.
How old is your site? New sites often get ranked high in SERPs, this is because of New Content Boost but after some time, such site's rank begin to decrease. If you want to get a stable position in SERPs, then I suggest you keep doing SEO work and try to get some quality and relevant backlinks.
Maybe the niche you're competing in is very competitive, so everytime you reach the first page some other sites manage to beat your ranking.... :/
Google is sooo unstable these days because of competition. The degree of ranking fluctuation usually depends on how competitive your target keywords are.

many sites suffer this way due to google dance, but you should keep constant efforts in optimizing your site and getting it to the top. maybe after some time , your site will have stable rankings , just keep on with your seo , it happens for new sites.
These also happens to other websites especially during google update, and it only means one thing. Your websites is need more backlinks to become stable on the rankings.
It is somewhat comforting to know that mine are not the only sites that have been doing this dance in and out of the rankings. I am trying to stay calm and continue creating quality backlinks - I hope they will return to decent ranking soon. Does anyone know why my links page and privacy policy page would be ranking well when the main pages have disappeared though?
could it be because your internal link structure favours those pages. i.e every page on your site links to them ? hence they get ranked better
Thanks Gambling Guy that is an interesting concept about my linking structure, but I believe that the pages all link to each other as they have the same linking info at the top and bottom of the pages???
I think it's Not penalizing. it's only some fluctuations of other's work for their websites which gets them higher than you.
I have seen a lot of dancing on both established and new sites. One example is Amazon.com is dropping way down in the SERPs where they used to always be in the top 5 for certain keywords. There are other branded sites that also seem to be dropping.
Google's Alogarithms give temporary rankings to great fresh content but long term stability depends on many factors not limited to... 1> Updated Content on day to day basis (Daily). 2> Backlinks with Anchor Text. 3> Social Media Links. 4> Links from authority websites. And at last, it depends on Big G's mood, so try to add more content (unique) which can help ur visitors find the solution for which they are searching Big G.
