How many directories should I submit?

All of them ....

 

Very useful information guys! Especially for beginners. One question comes up, is it important to check where your link on that specific directory website is going to be placed? I'm only asking as it may be possible that the PR which you initially found(say 4 or 5) may be way lower on the page where your link is going to be placed. Does anybody have an idea?

directories are nice and can get you some traffic but with sites like google out there its best not to spend to much time on directories. but its a great filler when you have time. get a good list of quality directories and plug away at them in you spare time.

 

Care to elaborate? What on earth does google have to do with directory value and or penetration in the wonderful world of the internet?

 

i'm sorry. i just felt that directories are nice and you can get traffic from them but you will get better traffic out of being in a well known search engine like google. maybe i mis understood the original question.

 

Okay, I'm new to the whole world of online marketing, and I've only been tinkering with my website which has no traffic and no links to it out there at all yet. Wouldn't submitting to well-targeted directories eventually help me get more links to my site and therefore increase my standing in google searches?

You can submit the directories as much as you can. It is nothing but to boost your site in search engine.

 

You should submit website in the greater amount of directories. The more the better. But quality is more important than quantity.
As a rule high-quality free directories have a high SEO parameters - PR and Alexa statistic.

 

I'd put more weight into actual traffic than Alex Rank or the PR. PR does not always pass, and in reality PR itself has become about as important in the overall value of a site as wooden nickels.

Find directories where your top comptitors are listed.

Do a search for "web directory" and "link directory" to find some high ranking directories. Consider a listing in a handful of directories that come up in the first 20 listings.
