Which CMS would you recommend for newsportal, a website that can be used to manage news, just like what they have here: http://www.newsnow.co.uk/ I am thinking of going for wordpress

With the kind of layout for the newsnow site, I'd say go for Joomla, as it's got the potential to provide a lot more in terms of 'add-ons' for a news site. Classifieds, job listings, etc. WordPress, however, is a lot simpler to get started with. It depends on where you want to go, ultimately. WordPress to get up and running quickly with a pure news site, no fancy add-ons, and Joomla for longer term development, if you want to add more than adsense to get income from the site.

Wordpress is great and if you use a magazine theme you can get a very nice news site.

Joomla is more difficult to manage but it's very powerful CMS.

Wordpress is great for SEO. I am a web developer and I use only WordPress to for CMS. It is free, it has a large community and a lot of plugins and themes. You can use it for your news website. I have many WordPress sites with very good results in Google Search and Yahoo. If you want help please give me a PM.

I think you want a system that will give you the best in news agregation. I have used joomla and wordpress but not in a news agregation capacity. I have seen excellent examples of sites doing this using Wordpress and Drupal. If you are familiar with drupal I would suggest Wordpress

I never recommend joomla for anything. Its not secure and its bloated. Do a google search for "joomla hacked." After you get finished reading all of the post in various support forums about people getting their joomla site hacked, you will probably change your mind.

I used Joomla for about 7 months. Lets just say that I was not very impressed with how serious the community took security. It was like they wanted to offer as many plugins as possible, but did not care if there were security issues.

Then there is the bloat. Joomla is like a beached whale when it comes to performance.

A couple of years ago the joomla developers did not want any commercial software integrated with joomla. This caused a rift in the open source community. Other open source projects, such as the SMF forum dropped support for integration with joomla. The SMF project even removed the SMF - joomla bridge from their downloads section.

Wordpress on the other hand is light weight, secure and has tons of quality plugins.

I prefer wordpress for news websites. Wordpress is also customization and a lot of themes make your blog looking like a real website.

From my personal experience - @7 months with joomla and @10 months with wordpress - you are going to be happier with wordpress.

There is a learning curve, but its no big deal. In maybe a week or 2, you should be able to get around woirdpress admin panel with ease.

One of the big differences that I like about wordpress, and prefer over joomla, is how easy it is to install plugins. If a plugin screws up your wordpress site, you just delete the folder of that plugin. And the site disables the plugin. Its like a backup safety feature.

The last time I checked, joomla did not have a built in commenting system. Wordpress has this already built in. If you use the wordpress commenting system, get the ReCapthca modification to stop spam bots from posting comments.

Overall, there is a world of difference between joomla and wordpress. And in my opinion, you are going to be much happier with wordpress.

there are cms dedicated entirely to news. Do a google search for NEWS CMS. You can try phpcow etc. Joomla can be very complicated and resource intensive

In my experience Joomla is one big target for hackers and script kiddies. I had my Joomla site hacked more times than you could shake a stick at, but once switched to WP no issues.

I use both. Joomla does have some great advantages in terms of flexibility with your data. However it has some pretty big disadvantages for interaction.

    1. The commenting even through 3rd parties is very weak
    2. Wordpress makes it simple to assign an article to multiple categories
    3. Wordpress is easier to add your article, images, and tags

Joomla can be finicky to upload images, sometimes they work sometimes they don't and harder to upgrade to new versions. Must be sure your host is really on top of their end of updates.

For my money I'd go with Wordpress and a News Template unless you have very specific reasons not to.

The think I like the least about Wordpress is the archiving... yes I know it's a blog, but I do not always want certain articles to be buried by date. Joomla has many sorting options that allow you to keep the article you want in the order you want.
