Article marketing isn't dead... it's just nowhere near as effective as it used to be. I often use it for new sites as it's a fairly easy way to bring in some links but to work properly you do need quantity. I also have doubts over whether it helps in very competitive niches.

Article marketing is almost dead. I think it is far better to co publish in blogs. I will soon stop submitting to all these directories, they just have their interest at heart. Articlebase for example have nofollow, ezines have recently put some useless adsense code just after the title of your article and it is seriously decreasing clickthrough rate.

for me article marketing is still effective, you just have to find a good site to submit your article and much better to post it on your blog and then promote it.

You may pickup some links from the article directories. But it doesn't appear that many sites are republishing the articles due to the duplicate content filter.

I don't think that article marketing is dead.. the proof is I can generate traffic from it
though not that huge, but it still does good on the site I'm working right now..
And about the submission of the same article on the same article submission site
that is considered as spamming, so better check out the site you are submitting.. :)

Article marketing can still be done if you really know you to mix up the marketing... but I still don't think it's the best conversion method

I rarely write articles - but I do write at least one article for each client and stick it on EZineArticles.com or GoArticle.com

Remember that Google's algorithm is becoming more and more sophisticated in detecting spam, unnatural links and link schemes. Your intention should be to create really good articles, relevant to your site, and post them to a few of the leading article directories. Changing a few words here and there and then submitting them to hundreds of additional article directories will likely not help you. However, I don't think it will hurt you either. You might be submitting to hundreds of sites just to get more people clicking on your links, and not just to manipulate page rank.

My issue is that most online articles these days are just crap. People writing a few hundred useless words just to get a few links. I would concentrate on submitting to sites that actually have to approve your article first. I would imagine that Google would consider links from these sites as being more valuable.

I know, I was told once that the best way to do this is publish something to your site first, and then turn it into an article, and that it would be fine, because the original source was on your site first - this simply is not true - it backfired. I did it over and over again before I even had a chance.

Scaled article marketing - with so many people submitting articles to article directories and many of them competing with you on the same niche, it's important that you have a lot of firepower...a lot of ammunition.

Outsource! There are a lot of writers here in Digitalpoint who're willing to help you without boring a hole in your pocket.
